The New Generation of Brompton-like Folding Bikes: Introducing the MINT Bob7
Since the patent on Brompton's folding bikes expired, many similar compact foldable bikes have emerged on the market, like mushrooms after the rain. I believe the popularity of these bikes is not only due to their attractive appearance but also their use of 16-inch 349 wheelsets, which allow them to fold into a particularly compact size, making them ideal for space-limited cities like Hong Kong. Today, I’ll introduce the MINT Bob7, a highly acclaimed Brompton-like folding bike recently launched. If you remember, the bike Chris used for the cycling challenge on the quarantine platform was the previous generation of Bob7, the BOB 6. Additionally, I’ll compare it in detail with another popular folding bike, the Dahon Mini 349, to help you make an informed decision before purchasing. Want to learn more? Keep reading!

Detailed Specifications of the MINT Bob7
Frame Design
The MINT Bob7's design exemplifies high quality and functionality. The entire bike is made from Chromoly steel, ensuring structural strength and durability. The handlebars feature a unique M-shaped design and are paired with ODI-brand foam grips, offering a comfortable hold and excellent anti-slip performance. The bike also includes Brompton-style brakes and a 7-speed thumb shifter, enhancing maneuverability and precision. Notably, while the handlebar height is non-adjustable, the front has a pig-nose design for placing other items, making it more convenient to use.

Brake System
The MINT Bob7 focuses on every detail to enhance the riding experience. It is equipped with an efficient C-type brake system and comes with mudguards for added practicality. The wheels use 16-inch 349 aluminum alloy rims with 1/8/3 Skin Wall Tires, ensuring durability and comfort. The frame features a refined CNC-folding clamp, while the seat incorporates a classic rivet design and an aluminum alloy seat post clamp.

Crank and Pedals
The front crank features a hollow CNC metal design with a 52T chainring and foldable plastic pedals. The crank’s head has a protective cover to prevent damage. The rear wheel design is similar to Brompton’s, with a 74mm front hub and 112mm rear hub, meaning Brompton’s accessories can be used with this bike as well.

Gear System
The 7-speed gear system ranges from 11 to 26T and utilizes the current 7 o'clock transmission system. Due to the narrower rear hub, the 7-speed transmission uses a 10-speed specification for the cassette and chain, with CNC processing for the chainset and a chain tensioner, combining practicality with aesthetics.

Other Configurations
The MINT Bob7 excels not only in its basic features but also in detailed upgrades. The rear wheel is equipped with easy-rolling wheels, and the rear rack integrates with the rear wheel guard, enhancing overall stability and utility. The folding area has shock-absorbing rubber to effectively reduce vibrations and increase comfort.

Color
Visually, the bike features a brushed silver polished design that adds a modern and high-end feel. Every detail, such as the seat post clamp treatment, showcases exquisite craftsmanship, making the bike look elegant. These design elements not only enhance the bike's appearance but also reflect the brand’s commitment to quality.

Bike Material Knowledge: Chromoly vs. Aluminum Alloy
Before we dive into a detailed comparison of the two bikes, let's explore some bike material trivia. The Chromoly steel used in the Bob7 differs from the steel commonly used in folding bikes. Chromoly steel, composed of chromium and molybdenum, enhances the steel’s hardness, toughness, and ductility, offering excellent shock absorption. However, it is less corrosion-resistant than aluminum alloy. Therefore, many Chromoly frames are coated with a protective layer to extend their lifespan.
In contrast, aluminum alloy, typically made from magnesium and silicon, is lightweight and rigid, providing better starting performance and higher corrosion resistance. However, aluminum alloy is less hard than Chromoly and may be more prone to cracking under the same force, and its shock absorption is not as good as Chromoly. These material characteristics are important considerations when choosing a bike.
