Pinarello: The Cycling Giant of Unparalleled Quality and Unique Design

Pinarello, an Italian brand, is considered a legendary presence in the cycling world. Apart from its iconic frame designs, it is renowned for holding the record for the most overall victories in the Tour de France. However, at the same time, Pinarello's prices have always been astonishingly high, making affordability a significant barrier for many potential buyers.

This year, Pinarello has introduced two new more affordable series: the F series and the X series, providing a wider range of options for Pinarello enthusiasts.

Giovanni Pinarello: A Legendary Cyclist and Entrepreneur

Giovanni Pinarello, the founder of the Pinarello brand, was himself a professional cyclist. He achieved numerous victories in his career, laying a solid foundation for his cycling business. After retiring, he established his own bicycle brand with the goal of making the world's best bike.

Over the past 70 years, Giovanni Pinarello supported many cycling teams, securing more than 30 major cycling championships. Among them, Pinarello bicycles have won the Tour de France 15 times, a record that remains unmatched to this day. Pinarello's DNA is rooted in the pursuit of victory. They not only design beautiful bicycles but also continuously improve frame designs through collaboration with professional cyclists.

Pinarello has been renowned for its application of innovative technologies. As early as the 1980s, they hired engineers from the Lamborghini Formula 1 team to improve frame structures using carbon fiber and wind tunnel testing. They combine outstanding engineering with Italian traditional aesthetics, creating some groundbreaking frame designs that can be described as works of art, showcasing Pinarello's design excellence.

Pinarello also pays great attention to material selection. As an example, they insist on using the world's top-quality carbon fiber fabric from Japanese company Toray, without disclosing the materials used by other brands. Toray has over a century of experience in synthetic fiber production, including 50 years of carbon fiber production history. This commitment to selecting the finest materials reflects Pinarello's pursuit of quality.

Pinarello F Series: Top-level Racing Road Bikes and the Title of Baby Dogma

The Pinarello F Series consists of three models: F9, F7, and F5. Among them, the F Series is known as the Baby Dogma and is one of Pinarello's top-level racing road bikes. This series has achieved outstanding results in numerous competitions.

The design of the F Series closely resembles the F9 series, while the F5 provides a more attractive price point. These models feature versatile frames that excel in both flat and windy conditions as well as uphill climbs. They perfectly balance the demands of aerodynamics and frame weight.

The F Series is considered to inherit the genes of the Dogma Ready to Race. Both in appearance and frame design geometry, the F Series closely resembles the Dogma. For example, in the 50cm frame size, the stack and reach ratios of the Dogma and F Series are nearly identical.

Pinarello's Unique Design: Asymmetric Frame Design

The asymmetric frame design is adjusted based on the fundamental principle of fully utilizing the primary power output on the right side of the frame while pedaling. Although we pedal with both legs simultaneously, the main power output point is indeed the chain position on the right side of the frame.

Pinarello's frame design takes into account this asymmetric power distribution, thereby improving power transmission efficiency. Additionally, coupled with the triangular design of the chainstay in the rear fork, this design makes the transmission more agile and responsive. Pinarello's frame design not only considers power transfer efficiency but also emphasizes riding responsiveness.

Another unique design of Pinarello is its streamlined curved fork. This fork not only possesses Italian design aesthetics but also provides precise steering and absorbs vibrations from different directions. This design helps improve stability and comfort during rides.

Main Differences between the F Series and Dogma

The main difference between the F series and Dogma lies in the carbon fiber fabrics used for the frames. The Dogma utilizes Toray's top-of-the-line award-winning T1100 carbon fiber fabric, while the F9 and F7 use T900 carbon fiber, and the F5 uses T78 carbon fiber fabric.

The characteristics of carbon fiber fabric can be described in two aspects. First is the Tensile Modulus, which measures the stiffness of the carbon fiber fabric, i.e., how easily it deforms. The second aspect is Tensile Strength, which measures the fabric's strength, i.e., how easily it breaks.

Based on the provided chart, it can be seen that the T1100 carbon fiber fabric used in the Dogma performs exceptionally well in both aspects. However, the T78 carbon fiber fabric used in the F5 is not far behind. To achieve the strength and stiffness levels of the Dogma with the T78 fabric, it may require using thicker fabric, which would also increase the weight of the frame.

It is worth noting that the weight difference between the F5 and Dogma is approximately 130 grams. This indicates that Pinarello still focuses on providing good strength and stiffness performance while maintaining lightweight in the F series.

Unique Design of the F5

The F5 features Pinarello's in-house produced Mose aluminum handlebar instead of an integrated carbon handlebar. However, its design remains unique. For example, the teardrop-shaped aero handlebar and fully internal cable routing system can also be seen on the F5. This means that all the cables are completely hidden, without any exposed cables.

In terms of wheelsets, the F5 comes with an aero wheelset equipped with 160mm disc brakes and Pirelli P7 tires. Additionally, with the fork design paired with this wheelset, the F5 supports the installation of tires up to 30mm wide, providing increased versatility. These features make the F5 a bike with unique charm in design and performance.

Special Seatpost Design

The F5 features a patented design of an integrated seat clamp screw, making it easy to adjust and allowing for a flatter seatpost for better aerodynamic performance. Another change is the position of the electronic shifting system's battery. Previously, the battery was typically installed near the seatpost, but it has now been moved to the BB (bottom bracket) position, making the upper part more compact and lowering the center of gravity.

Multiple Frame Size Options

In terms of frame size options, Pinarello offers up to 9 size options for the F5, which is quite rare among most mainstream brands. Typically, brands may offer 4 to 5 size options, and high-end frames may have 6 to 7 size options. However, Pinarello strives to provide more size choices to ensure a more precise fit for riders of different body types. These improvements and diversification of options make the F5 a powerful bike designed for individual needs. In addition to the mentioned Altica kit, the F5 also offers the choice of 105 DI2 (electronic shifting), allowing riders to select different shifting systems based on their preferences and needs.

Variety in Appearance

In terms of colors, apart from the showcased Matte Titanium color, the F5 is also available in other reserved colors. These reserved colors also offer excellent aesthetics and appeal.
