Giant Propel Series: The Aero Machine for Speed

The Birth of the Propel Series: Built for Speed

Hey everyone! Today, let's dive into a special bike — the Giant Propel series! This bike isn’t just known for its sleek design but also for its high-performance aero features that have made waves in the cycling world. Since the launch of the new model in 2022, Propel has been the talk of the town. But it’s not just about its cool looks; this bike has also achieved remarkable success on the race track.

Giant: The Leader in Technology and Innovation for Road Bike Series

As the largest bicycle brand in the world, Giant has invested significant resources in design technology, materials application, and production techniques in recent years, aiming to enhance and improve its road bike series. Currently, Giant's road bikes are mainly divided into three series: the lightweight climbing model TCR, the long-distance comfort model Defy, and the aerodynamic frame Propel, which we will introduce today. The designs of these series not only highlight Giant's pursuit of riding performance but also cater to the diverse needs of different cyclists. If you're interested in the TCR and Defy series, feel free to revisit my previous introductions, and let’s explore Giant's innovation and excellence together!

Why the New Propel Achieved Three Stage Wins in the Tour de France?

The new generation Propel has successfully secured three stage wins in the Tour de France, thanks to Giant's innovative approach in bike design. It introduced AeroSystem Shaping Technology, which sounds technical, but simply put, it involves a complete redesign of every detail to minimize aerodynamic drag. This process mainly consists of three steps: first, utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics to simulate the airflow around the frame, then designing Proton Tons for wind tunnel testing, and finally creating several different models based on the test data. Professional cyclists were invited for real-world testing to gather their feedback, leading to the refinement of the current design.

Through AeroSystem, Giant has designed a signature truncated oval frame that features its distinctive shape in every component, including the head tube, down tube, rear stays, and seat post.

In addition, the engineering team collaborated with aerodynamics experts from Germany's GST to not only simulate the static aerodynamic drag of the bike but also consider the aerodynamic performance during riding. Every detail was meticulously redesigned, including the development of two different versions of the water bottle cage, all aimed at minimizing drag. The new frame is significantly lighter compared to the previous generation; for instance, the Advanced SL model has reduced its weight by 225 grams, making it one of the lightest aerodynamic frames on the market. These innovations not only enhance performance but also allow the new Propel to stand out in competitions.

The Perfect Balance of Increased Stiffness and Lightweight

The new Propel not only sheds weight but also achieves a significant increase in stiffness. The latest model boasts a 26% improvement in the stiffness-to-weight ratio compared to its predecessor.

When the bike becomes lighter while maintaining high stiffness, its performance naturally improves significantly. Achieving such lightweight design hinges on the choice of materials. Giant consistently utilizes high-grade carbon fiber and has applied at least three advanced technologies in its frames, including Continuous Fiber Technology, CNT Technology, and Fusion Process.

The application of these new technologies, combined with Giant's manufacturing advantages, enables a seamless integration of different materials and frame designs. As a result, the Propel can save approximately 6 watts of power at a speed of 40 km/h. Additionally, the reinforced design at the head tube, down tube, and bottom bracket further enhances stiffness by 9.2%. These optimizations not only improve riding performance but also demonstrate Giant's ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in bicycle technology.

Comfort and Control: Thoughtful Design of the Propel

A robust frame alone is not enough to make the Propel a versatile bike; comfort and handling are equally important. To address these needs, the Propel features a redesigned rear section of the frame, with slimmer designs for the seat post and rear stays. At the Advanced SL level, the integrated Vector seat post is 45 grams lighter than the previous generation, not only reducing weight but also enhancing overall comfort. This results in an 85% improvement in rider comfort compared to the last model.

Additionally, to further improve comfort during long rides, the new Propel supports tires up to 30mm wide. While previous aerodynamic frame designs were quite aggressive, Propel has adapted to the evolving cycling trends. Its geometry now closely resembles that of the TCR, offering agile and responsive handling. For example, the medium frame has a Stack and Reach ratio of 1.4, paired with a 73-degree head tube angle, along with slightly shortened wheelbase and rear stays. These adjustments enhance both flexibility and stability, allowing the Propel to deliver superior performance during high-speed corners or when riding in a pack, enabling cyclists to navigate various road conditions with confidence.

Such a design makes the Propel not just a bike tailored for the racetrack; it is equally suitable for daily commutes or long-distance rides. This versatility meets various cycling needs, allowing riders to enjoy a stable and comfortable experience on any type of terrain. Whether navigating city streets or tackling longer journeys, the Propel ensures that cyclists can ride with confidence and ease.

Propel's New Design: A Handlebar that Balances Comfort and Performance

The handlebar of the Propel has also been completely redesigned, featuring a carbon fiber flat handlebar that not only enhances aerodynamic performance but also improves comfort. When riders feel fatigued, resting their hands on the flat handlebar offers greater ease. Additionally, to boost riding efficiency, the new handlebar design lowers the Handlebar Drop, providing more power during short sprints. The separated goose neck and handlebar design allow for more flexible adjustments, catering to the diverse needs of different cyclists.

This model features a fully internal cable routing design, with a streamlined goose neck that not only neatly houses all the cables but also combines aesthetics with aerodynamic functionality.

In terms of the drivetrain, the Advanced Pro 0 is equipped with the Ultegra 12-speed DI2 system, featuring an integrated power meter. The front chainring is configured as 52/36T, while the rear cassette is 11-30T, providing a typical gear ratio for an aerodynamic frame. For braking, it utilizes Ultegra hydraulic disc brakes, with both front and rear rotors being Center-Lock 160mm.

In terms of wheels, the Propel is equipped with Giant SLR 1 carbon fiber wheels with a 50mm rim height, paired with Cadex 25C tires. This setup not only enhances overall performance but also provides stable support during high-speed rides. The combination of these designs and technologies elevates the Propel to new heights in both performance and comfort, making it suitable for a variety of cycling needs.

Summary of the Propel Series: The Best Choice for Speed and Comfort

In summary, the Giant Propel series achieves a remarkable level of excellence in both design and performance. From its groundbreaking aerodynamic design to the lightweight frame, impressive stiffness, and optimized comfort features, the Propel series is undoubtedly one of the most competitive road bikes on the market.

Whether you're a professional cyclist or a passionate enthusiast, this bike offers an exceptional riding experience. If you're looking for a bicycle that combines speed and comfort, the Giant Propel is definitely a choice you shouldn't miss!
