Two road cyclists riding a coastal road at sunrise

Pedals built around your legs — not the other way round. The SQ Lab 512 is a lightweight, Look Keo-compatible road bike pedal made in four axle lengths, so you can match it to your natural foot position and ease knee strain on long rides.

SQ Lab 512 at a glance

Why do your knees ache after a long ride?

If the outside of your knee starts to nag after a few hours in the saddle — climbing Tai Mo Shan, rolling out to Sai Kung or holding a high cadence along Tolo Harbour — your legs are rarely the problem. Most clipless pedals lock every rider into the same parallel foot position, no matter how their hips, knees and ankles actually line up. Over thousands of pedal strokes, that mismatch builds into one-sided strain, often felt as fibular head syndrome: the ache just below the outside of the knee.

German ergonomics specialist SQ Lab designed the 512 to fix exactly that. Instead of one axle for everyone, it comes in four axle lengths, so you can match the pedal to your own leg axis and shoe size — the same logic a professional bike fit uses, built straight into the pedal.

Who is the SQ Lab 512 for?

If you only ride short, flat routes and have never had knee trouble, a standard pedal will do the job. The 512 earns its place for riders who already feel that strain, or who want every watt of a long ride to count.

SQ Lab 512 vs Look Keo Classic 3

All three pedals use Look Keo cleats, so the same shoes work with any of them. The big difference is that the 512 comes in four axle lengths, letting you set how far apart your feet sit.

What makes the 512 worth it

Four axle lengths — a pedal that actually fits

SQ Lab 512 road bike pedals in four axle lengths S, M, L and XL side by side

Choose −5, ±0, +8 or +15 mm (S / M / L / XL). Each length changes the distance from crank to pedal centre (50 / 53.7 / 61.8 / 68.4 mm), so your feet sit at their natural width instead of being pushed inward or outward. The result: straighter knee tracking, more direct power transfer and less one-sided load.

Light where it matters

From 235 g per pair (approx. 318 g including cleats and screws). A carbon-composite body and CrMo steel axle keep the weight down without giving up strength — you will feel it on every climb.

Release tension you set yourself

Entry and release stiffness are adjustable. New to clipless pedals? Start soft and forgiving. Racing? Dial in a firm, secure hold.

Keep your shoes

The 512 uses the widely available Look Keo cleat standard (6° float) and fits any 3-bolt road shoe. Cleats and screws are included.

How to choose your axle length

SQ Lab 512 pedal size chart by EU shoe size 36 to 48 for standard and V-shaped foot position

  1. Find your EU shoe size on the left of the chart.
  2. Check your natural foot position: standard (feet roughly parallel) or V-shaped (toes pointing outward).
  3. Read across to your recommended size.

Example: EU 42 with a standard foot position → size M (±0 mm). EU 42 with a V-shaped foot position → size L (+8 mm).

Jollymap tip: SQ Lab’s chart is a good starting point, but every rider’s feet and knees track differently. For the most accurate choice, book a Jollymap Bike Fit — we measure your feet and riding position, recommend the right axle length and can set up your cleats at the same time. Already know your axle length? Book our Shoe Cleats Setup service: we set the position and angle of your Look Keo cleats from your foot length, width and metatarsal position in about 20–30 minutes (bring your own shoes and cleats).

To take more strain out of long rides, pair the 512 with SQ Lab’s 612 R Ergowave road saddle and Innerbarends 410 2.0 ergonomic bar ends.

FAQ

Are Look Keo and Shimano SPD-SL cleats interchangeable?

No. The cleats are shaped differently, and the 512 only works with Look Keo cleats. Both systems use the same 3-bolt mounting pattern, though, so your current SPD-SL road shoes still work — just fit the Look Keo cleats included in the box.

Which axle length should I choose?

Start with the size chart above: find your EU shoe size, then your foot position. For example, EU 40–43 with a standard foot position is size M. For the most accurate choice, book a Jollymap Bike Fit.

Is 6° of float right for me?

For most road riders, yes. 6° is the most common float on road pedals: it lets your knees rotate naturally through the pedal stroke while keeping your foot stable and your power transfer precise.

Will the 512 cope with Hong Kong’s heat and humidity?

Yes. The carbon-composite body does not corrode, and the CrMo axle is built for strength. Wipe the pedals dry after wet rides and have the bearings checked during your regular bike service.

I am new to clipless pedals. Is the 512 too advanced?

No. Set the release tension to its softest setting while you learn to clip in and out, then tighten it as you gain confidence.

Can I use the 512 on an e-road bike?

Yes. The 512 is e-bike ready, as long as it is not wider than your bike’s original pedal.

Can I use standard Look Keo replacement cleats?

Yes. The 512 is compatible with the Look Keo cleat system. We stock Look Keo Grip cleats in 0°, 4.5° and 9° float.

How is the 512 different from a standard road pedal?

A standard pedal gives every rider the same foot position. The 512’s four axle lengths let you match the pedal to your own body, much like a professional bike fit — so you are paying for comfort and efficiency that last, not just a lighter pedal.

Can I still ride with knee pain?

It depends on the cause. If your knee is persistently painful or swollen, see a doctor or physiotherapist first. If the pain only appears on the outside of the knee after long rides, common causes include saddle height, cleat angle and foot width; adjusting your setup (such as the 512’s axle length and cleat position) often helps, ideally checked during a bike fit.

How do I install the 512 pedals?

Like any pedal: the right pedal has a standard thread (tighten clockwise) and the left pedal a reverse thread (tighten anticlockwise). Match left and right, then thread them into the cranks. The cleats bolt to your shoe with three screws. Cleat position and angle directly affect your knees, so if you are unsure, book our Shoe Cleats Setup service.

How often should I replace the cleats?

There is no fixed interval — it depends on your mileage and how much you walk in your cycling shoes. Replace them when they look worn, when clipping in or out feels loose, or when your foot moves unusually on the pedal. Walking in cycling shoes wears cleats fastest.
