The Birdy GT is a previous-generation Birdy light off-road folding bike, built on the same monocoque frame and full-suspension platform as the rest of the range but fitted with SRAM 10-speed gearing, wider Schwalbe Black Jack tyres and hydraulic disc brakes so it can handle gravel paths and rougher trails without giving up the fold. Jollymap also carries the newer-generation Birdy GV Plus 10 Speed Folding Bike if you'd like to compare a more recent off-road option.

The Problem It Solves
Most folding bikes are built purely for pavement and struggle the moment the surface turns to gravel or a bumpy trail - narrow tyres and rim brakes don't cope well with loose surfaces or wet weather. The GT keeps Birdy's full-suspension comfort but swaps in wider, more aggressive Schwalbe Black Jack tyres and hydraulic disc brakes with more consistent stopping power in Hong Kong's humid, rainy conditions, so you can ride a countryside cycle track or a gravel section without switching bikes.
Who It's For
Good for riders who want a single folding bike that covers both the daily commute and weekend rides on cycle tracks with rougher or unpaved sections - for example the Ma On Shan or Tai Mei Tuk waterfront paths. If you ride almost entirely on tarmac, the faster-rolling Birdy R 20inch 11 Speed Folding Bike will feel quicker; if you want the lowest-cost entry into the Birdy range, the Birdy Standard 9 Speed Folding Bike 3rd gen is the better value pick. See the comparison table below.
Wider tyres for mixed surfaces
Schwalbe Black Jack 18x1.9" tyres are noticeably wider than the Standard's 18x1.5" or the R20's 20x1.25", giving more grip and cushioning on gravel, wet tarmac and uneven cycle tracks.
Hydraulic disc brakes for consistent stopping power
The Juin Tech GG-R1 hydraulic system needs less hand force and stays more consistent than cable-actuated brakes when wet - a real advantage during Hong Kong's humid summer and typhoon season.
SRAM 10-speed drivetrain
An 11-32T freewheel with one more gear than the Standard's 9-speed setup gives slightly finer steps between gears for maintaining cadence on rolling terrain.
Same full suspension and fold as the rest of the range
The GT keeps the same folding suspension fork and PU rear elastomer as the rest of the Birdy line-up - it doesn't trade portability for off-road capability.
Choosing Between Birdy Models
The table below compares the Birdy range. All are full-suspension folding designs; apart from the P45's P-series hydroformed frame, they share the same Monocoque frame, so the differences are mainly tyres, drivetrain, brakes and intended use:

Which other Birdy model suits you?
- The GT's successor: Birdy GV Plus 10 Speed Folding Bike - the same SRAM X5 10-speed and Juin Tech cable-actuated hydraulic disc brakes, mainly upgraded with wider Schwalbe Billy Bonkers 18x2.0" tyres and a 590mm handlebar.
- Everyday commuting or a first folding bike: Birdy Standard 9 Speed Folding Bike 3rd gen - 18" CST 18x1.5" tyres, Shimano Sora 9-speed and TRP Spyre mechanical disc brakes, 10.9 kg without pedals.
- Often pushing the bike through malls or over short distances: Birdy URB 9 Speed Folding Bike - same frame and Shimano Sora 9-speed drivetrain as the Standard, with Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, Schwalbe Big Apple 18x2.0" tyres and a trolley rack with rolling wheels as standard.
- Speed on tarmac with a flat bar: Birdy R 20inch 11 Speed Folding Bike - 20" Panaracer Minits Tough 20x1.25" tyres, Shimano 105 11-speed and TRP Spyre SLC mechanical disc brakes, 10.2 kg without pedals.
- A road-bike dropbar position: Birdy P45 Dropbar Folding Bike - 20" wheels like the R, with a dropbar, SRAM Apex1 11-speed, Juin Tech cable-actuated hydraulic disc brakes, a Hubsmith carbon wheelset and a P-series hydroformed frame; a Birdy 30th anniversary limited edition.

Jollymap's Advice
Accessory fit (kickstand, rear rack, easy wheels, suspension upgrades) depends on the model and wheel size - Birdy accessories are typically listed for either 18" (355) or 20" (406) wheels, so a part sized for one model may not fit another. Our Ridea Birdy Carbon Front and Rear Suspension set FSBD2 + RSBD2 is available as a suspension upgrade. Not sure a part fits your exact bike? Contact us before you buy. Send us your bike's model and a photo through the "Talk to us" button on our online store or our Jollymap Facebook page, and we'll confirm fit before you order.

FAQ
What makes the Birdy GT different from the Birdy Standard and Birdy R20?
All three share the same monocoque frame and full suspension, but the GT is built for light off-road use: wider Schwalbe Black Jack tyres, SRAM 10-speed gearing and hydraulic disc brakes, versus the Standard's road-focused Shimano Sora 9-speed or the R20's faster Shimano 105 11-speed setup. See the comparison table above.
Is the Birdy GT suitable for gravel or off-road trails?
It's designed for light off-road use - gravel paths, countryside cycle tracks and uneven surfaces - thanks to its wider 18x1.9" tyres and hydraulic disc brakes. It is not built for technical mountain biking terrain.
How much does the Birdy GT weigh?
11kg without pedals, slightly heavier than the Standard (10.9kg) and R20 (10.2kg).
What rider height is the Birdy GT suitable for?
It is suitable for riders 145-185cm tall, with a maximum load of 110kg including luggage. If you are close to either end of this range, contact us before ordering.
Does the Birdy GT have hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes?
Hydraulic - a Juin Tech GG-R1 cable-actuated hydraulic disc brake system with 160mm rotors, which needs less hand force and stays more consistent in wet weather than the mechanical disc brakes on the Standard.
Can I fit a rear rack or easy wheels to the Birdy GT?
Yes, but fit depends on wheel size and model - Birdy accessories are typically listed for either 18" (355) or 20" (406) wheels. Send us a photo of your bike and the accessory you're considering before ordering and we'll confirm compatibility.
Is there a newer-generation model than the Birdy GT?
Yes - Jollymap also carries the Birdy GV Plus 10 Speed Folding Bike, the successor to the Birdy GT. It keeps the same SRAM X5 10-speed and Juin Tech cable-actuated hydraulic disc brakes, mainly upgrading to wider Schwalbe Billy Bonkers 18x2.0" tyres and a 590mm handlebar. Compare both product pages if you're deciding between them.
