The Birdy Standard 3rd gen is a full-suspension folding bike built around a one-piece (monocoque) aluminium frame, giving it a lighter, stiffer ride than most folding bikes while still packing down to a compact 65 x 32 x 75 cm. Reliable Shimano Sora 9-speed gearing keeps maintenance simple, and front + rear suspension smooths out Hong Kong's uneven pavements and cycle tracks.

The Problem It Solves
Most budget folding bikes use a rigid frame, so every pothole and tram track on the way to the MTR station goes straight into your hands. The Birdy Standard's front and rear suspension absorbs that vibration, so it rides closer to a small-wheel city bike than a typical folding bike, while still folding small enough to store in a car boot or a small flat.
Who It's For
Good for commuters riding on mixed road surfaces, apartment dwellers who need a bike that folds small for storage, and beginners who want their first folding bike to feel stable and comfortable rather than twitchy. If you mainly want speed for longer weekend rides, the 11-speed Birdy R 20inch 11 Speed Folding Bike or off-road-ready Birdy GT 10 Speed Folding Bike is worth comparing first - see the model comparison below.
Monocoque frame, lighter and stiffer
The one-piece aluminium monocoque frame (AL 6061 front / AL 7005 rear) removes the welded joints of older folding bike frames, cutting weight while adding torsional stiffness - you feel less frame flex when standing on the pedals.
Full suspension for daily riding
The folding front fork carries an 8.5-coil spring, and the rear pivot runs on a PU elastomer. Together they take the edge off broken pavement, drain covers and speed bumps, which matters more on a small-wheel bike than a full-size one.
Shimano Sora 9-speed, low maintenance
Shimano Sora is a proven road-bike groupset, so replacement parts and servicing are widely available at any Shimano-stocking shop, not just folding bike specialists.
Compact folded footprint
Folded to 65 x 32 x 75 cm, the Standard stores in a car boot or a small Hong Kong flat's storeroom without needing a dedicated bike room. Bringing a folded bike onto the MTR, buses or minibuses is subject to each operator's own rules on luggage size.
Choosing Between Birdy Models
The table below compares the Birdy range. All are full-suspension folding designs; apart from the P45's P-series hydroformed frame, they share the same Monocoque frame, so the differences are mainly tyres, drivetrain, brakes and intended use:

Jollymap's Advice
Accessory fit (kickstand, rear rack, easy wheels, suspension upgrades) depends on the model and wheel size - Birdy accessories are typically listed for either 18" (355) or 20" (406) wheels, so a part sized for one model may not fit another. Our Ridea Birdy Carbon Front and Rear Suspension set FSBD2 + RSBD2 is available as a suspension upgrade. Not sure a part fits your exact bike? Contact us before you buy. Send us your bike's model and a photo through the "Talk to us" button on our online store or our Jollymap Facebook page, and we'll confirm fit before you order.

How to Fold and Unfold the Birdy
The Birdy's main frame is a rigid monocoque beam and does not fold in half. Instead, the rear wheel (on its rear swing-arm) and the front wheel (on the fork) each fold in underneath the main beam, and the handlebar stem then folds down. The official videos below show the exact sequence.

FAQ
Does the Birdy Standard have front and rear suspension?
Yes. It uses a folding front suspension fork with an 8.5-coil spring plus a rear PU elastomer, the same suspension platform as the R20 and GT. This is what separates Birdy from most rigid-frame folding bikes.
How is the Birdy Standard different from the Birdy R20 and Birdy GT?
They share the same monocoque frame and suspension, but differ in gearing and wheel size: the Standard runs Shimano Sora 9-speed on 18" wheels for everyday commuting, the R20 runs Shimano 105 11-speed on 20" wheels for speed, and the GT runs SRAM 10-speed on 18" wheels with wider tyres for light off-road use. See the comparison table above.
What is the folded size and can it fit on Hong Kong public transport?
Folded, it measures 65cm (H) x 32cm (W) x 75cm (L), and it fits in most car boots. Bringing a folded bike onto the MTR, buses or minibuses as hand luggage is subject to each operator's own rules on luggage size, so check with the operator if you plan to do this regularly.
What rider height is the Birdy Standard suitable for?
Pacific Cycles specifies a rider height range of 145-185cm, with a maximum load of 110kg including luggage. If you are close to either end of this range, contact us before ordering so we can advise on fit.
Is the Birdy Standard suitable for a first folding bike / beginner rider?
Yes. The 9-speed Shimano Sora drivetrain is simple to use and low-maintenance, and the suspension makes the ride more forgiving than a rigid folding bike, which is usually easier for new riders to get comfortable on.
How do you fold the Birdy Standard?
The rear wheel folds in under the main frame on its rear swing-arm, the front wheel folds back on the fork, and the handlebar stem then folds down - the rigid monocoque main beam itself does not fold in half. See the official fold and unfold videos above for the exact sequence.
Can I fit a rear rack or easy wheels to the Birdy Standard?
Yes, but fit depends on wheel size and model - Birdy accessories are typically listed for either 18" (355) or 20" (406) wheels. Send us a photo of your bike and the accessory you're considering before ordering and we'll confirm compatibility.
How much does the Birdy Standard weigh and is it airline-friendly for travel?
10.9kg without pedals. This is light enough to carry up stairs or lift into a car boot, though it is heavier than the R20 (10.2kg); check your airline's folding bike policy separately if you plan to fly with it.
Specifications and components follow the manufacturer's latest release and may change without notice. If in doubt, please contact us to confirm before ordering.
