Last updated: 7 October 2026 (added rider heights from our spec sheets, a size comparison table and two charts)
LanQ is an entry-level kids' bike brand built around a magnesium alloy frame. Jollymap stocks it in 16, 18 and 20 inch, all single speed. Our spec sheets list rider heights of 108–135 cm, 115–145 cm and 125–155 cm respectively, and Jason weighed them at 8.3 to 9.5 kg with accessories fitted.
This guide is based on Jason's YouTube review from July 2024 (in Cantonese), checked again in October 2026 against the specification tables on our product pages. Where the video and the spec sheet disagree, we say so.
Key points
- Sizes: 16, 18 and 20 inch, all single speed, for riders from 108 cm to 155 cm tall.
- Weight (Jason's scale): 8.3 kg for the 16 in with stabilisers, 8.8 kg for the 18 in and 9.5 kg for the 20 in, both with kickstand.
- Brakes: front V-brake and rear drum brake on the 16 in shown in the video; mechanical discs on the 18 and 20 in.
- Price: all three sizes were under HK$1,000 on our shop when we checked on 7 October 2026; see the product pages for today's price.
What is LanQ, and why a magnesium frame?
LanQ's selling point is the frame material: magnesium alloy instead of the steel used on most budget kids' bikes. Parents sometimes remember magnesium burning in school chemistry lessons. According to Wikipedia's entry on magnesium alloys, the fire risk applies to powder or fine chips; in sheet, bar, extruded or cast form the alloys "present no real fire hazard".
In the video Jason says that, by volume, magnesium alloy is about 30% lighter than aluminium and more than 70% lighter than steel. The densities listed on Wikipedia (about 1.8 g/cm³ for magnesium alloy, 2.8 for aluminium and 7.75–8.05 for steel) back this up. The catch is that magnesium is less ductile, so frames are made with thicker walls. The result weighs about the same as an aluminium frame but is still much lighter than steel. The frame is also made in one piece, with no visible welds.
Which LanQ size fits which height and age?
The spec sheets on our product pages give these rider heights: 108–135 cm for the 16 inch, 115–145 cm for the 18 inch and 125–155 cm for the 20 inch. The ranges overlap, so a child between 125 and 135 cm could ride any of the three. In that case, check the saddle height first, then how confident your child is on a bike.
Age guidance differs between sources. The video suggests 4–6 years for the 16 in, 6–9 for the 18 in and 7–10 for the 20 in; the spec sheets say 4–9, 5–11 and 6–13. Children of the same age vary a lot in height, so treat age as a rough guide only.
| 16 inch | 18 inch | 20 inch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rider height (spec sheet) | 108–135 cm | 115–145 cm | 125–155 cm |
| Saddle height | 51–63 cm | 54–73 cm | 54–77 cm |
| Gears | Single speed | Single speed | Single speed |
| Brakes | Front V-brake, rear drum (video); spec sheet lists V-brake only | Dual disc | Dual disc |
| Included (video) | Angled stabilisers, chain guard | Kickstand | Kickstand, bottle cage bolts |
| Weight (Jason's scale) | 8.3 kg with stabilisers | 8.8 kg with kickstand | 9.5 kg with kickstand |
One more discrepancy: the 16 in spec sheet says "training wheels: none", yet the bike in the video and in our product photos has them fitted. Please message us before ordering to confirm. For general sizing advice, see our guide to choosing a kids' bike size.
How heavy is a LanQ kids' bike?
Jason weighed each bike in the video: 8.3 kg for the 16 in with stabilisers, 8.8 kg for the 18 in and 9.5 kg for the 20 in with kickstand. The 20 in spec sheet lists 9.8 kg, so we quote both figures. Jason's rule of thumb is that a kids' bike should weigh no more than a third of the child's body weight. Working backwards, the 16 in LanQ suits children of about 25 kg or more, the 18 in about 26.4 kg and the 20 in about 28.5 kg.
LanQ is heavier than the lightweight brands Jason has reviewed before, such as Frog, Minivelo and Early Rider, though he says it is 1 to 2 kg lighter than a typical entry-level steel bike of the same size. For a lighter 16 in, compare the Frog 44 16 inch (6.39 kg on its product page); for 20 in, the 8-speed Frog 53 20 inch (8.15 kg). Both cost more than LanQ.
What do you get for the money?
The 16 in uses a front V-brake and a rear drum brake, which Jason rates above the basic caliper brakes on many budget bikes; the 18 and 20 in get mechanical disc brakes. Brake levers are sized for small hands and have a reach adjustment screw. The seat post uses a quick-release clamp, so you can change saddle height without tools, and the PU saddle is thicker than most Jason has seen on kids' bikes.
The rims are aluminium with sealed-bearing hubs, which spin more smoothly and keep out dust and water better than loose-ball bearings. Tyres are about two inches wide with a knobbly tread; the spec sheet names CST mountain bike tyres. Every size has front and rear reflectors and a bell, the stem is adjustable for height, and the 20 in has bottle cage bolts under the frame.
Buying a budget kids' bike online: what to factor in
Many Hong Kong parents look on Taobao for cheap kids' bikes. In the video Jason lists the costs that are easy to miss: shipping to Hong Kong can blow the budget, the bike usually arrives for you to assemble, and if something goes wrong afterwards you have to arrange the follow-up yourself. Online shopping can still work out well; just add those costs before comparing prices.
On our shop, all three LanQ sizes were under HK$1,000 on 7 October 2026. If you choose our "Easy Take" bike delivery at checkout, the bike arrives fully assembled, either to the kerbside or to your door, and accessories such as a bell or bottle cage ordered with it are fitted too; the fee is confirmed at checkout and charged per bike. Under our returns policy, assembled items cannot be returned, so measure your child's height first and message us if you are unsure about the size.
Which LanQ size should you choose?
All three were in stock online when we checked.
| Model | Rider height | Weight | Best for | Product page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LanQ 16 inch | 108–135 cm | 8.3 kg | A first pedal bike | See 16 inch |
| LanQ 18 inch | 115–145 cm | 8.8 kg | Outgrown a 16 in, not tall enough for 20 in | See 18 inch |
| LanQ 20 inch | 125–155 cm | 9.5 kg | Confident riders, flat routes | See 20 inch |
LanQ 16 inch: a first pedal bike
For riders of 108–135 cm moving on from a balance bike, with a 51–63 cm saddle range. The downside: at 8.3 kg with stabilisers it suits children of about 25 kg or more, so smaller children may be better on a lighter bike. See the LanQ 16 inch in green and orange, stock and today's price
LanQ 18 inch: the in-between size
For riders of 115–145 cm, with dual disc brakes and a 54–73 cm saddle range. The downside: single speed makes hills harder work, and silver was sold out when we checked. See the LanQ 18 inch in green and orange, stock and today's price
LanQ 20 inch: for taller riders on flat routes
For riders of 125–155 cm, with a 54–77 cm saddle range and bottle cage bolts. The downside: still single speed, so for long or hilly rides a geared 20 in may suit better. See the LanQ 20 inch in green, orange and silver, stock and today's price

FAQ
What age is a 16 inch bike for?
Going by the LanQ video, a 16 inch bike suits children of about 4 to 6, from roughly 108 cm tall, but height matters more than age. The LanQ 16 inch spec sheet says 108–135 cm and 4–9 years, while Jason's video suggests 4–6.
What height is an 18 inch bike for?
The LanQ 18 inch is listed for riders of 115–145 cm, with a saddle that adjusts from 54 to 73 cm. Between 125 and 135 cm, all three LanQ sizes fit, so choose by saddle height and riding confidence.
Does LanQ have gears?
No. All three LanQ sizes are single speed, which keeps them simple and low-maintenance on flat paths and cycle tracks.
Is a magnesium bike frame a fire risk?
No, not in normal use. Wikipedia's magnesium alloy entry notes that the alloys are highly combustible as powder or fine chips, a risk mainly during machining, but in sheet, bar, extruded or cast form present no real fire hazard.
