【You Must Know!】8 popular children's and teenagers' bicycle brands

Last updated: 7 October 2026 (brands replaced with ones we have in stock, plus a comparison table, weight chart, delivery fees and FAQ)
The best kids' bike brand depends on height and riding. For a first pedal bike from about 100 cm tall, start with the lightest: Minivelo and Frog 16-inch bikes weigh about 6 kg. From about 130 cm, for hills and gravel, look at 24-inch mountain bikes from Giant or Trek. LanQ and Pony suit tighter budgets, Sooibe folds small, and the HASA RTS1 is a 700c road bike sized for children.
This 2023 guide has been rewritten: Cannondale, VoomVoom, Horizon and Early Rider have sold out or nearly so, and all eight brands below were in stock on 7 October 2026. Specs come from the brand or our product pages.
Key points
- Lightest 16-inch: Minivelo 16 (6.2 kg) and Frog 44 (6.39 kg), over 3 kg lighter than the Pony 16 (about 9.5 kg).
- Folding: the Sooibe 007 Pro folds to 137 cm in total (brand spec), inside the MTR's 170 cm luggage limit.
- From about 130 cm: 24-inch Giant or Trek mountain bikes, or the HASA RTS1 700c road bike.
- Frog: BikeRadar reports it entered administration in February and could not find the funding to keep manufacturing in the UK; the brand and stock were then sold to Frasers Group. Our stock is while it lasts.
Which kids' bike brand should you choose?
Narrow the wheel size by height, then pick by use: weight for a first bike, folding if you carry it a lot, gears and suspension for hills and trails.
| Brand | Sizes in stock | Example weight | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minivelo | 14, 16, 20 in single-speed; 20, 24 in 8-speed | 16 in: 6.2 kg (shop spec) | A first bike, then moving up a size at a time |
| Sooibe | 14 in; 16 in (6-speed or extendable) | 009 16 in: 9.2 kg (brand) | Small flats and car boots |
| LanQ | 16, 18, 20 in | 16 in with stabilisers: 8.3 kg (weighed by us) | Tight budgets, avoiding a steel bike |
| Pony | 12, 14, 16, 18 in | 16 in: about 9.5 kg (distributor) | Ages 3 to 7, lots of colours |
| Frog | 14, 16, 20 in (while stocks last) | Frog 44: 6.39 kg with pedals (Frog) | Light weight, sizing by inside leg |
| Giant | 20, 24 in (suspension and disc options) | XTC Jr 20 Lite: 11 kg (Giant) | First slopes and gravel paths |
| Trek | 24 in | Precaliber 24: 11.93 kg (shop spec) | Ages 8+, eight gears for climbs |
| HASA | 700c (40 cm frame) | RTS1: about 9.6 kg without pedals (Jollymap) | About 130 cm+, curious about road riding |
Go by height and inside leg, not age. A common situation in our shop: a child who can ride is fine on tiptoes, while a beginner needs most of the foot flat on the ground to feel safe. Full sizing guide (in Chinese): 6 things to know when choosing a kids' bike.
The 8 brands: weight, gears and limits
Minivelo: from 14 inch up to 24 inch
A lightweight alloy kids' bike brand (made in China, per our spec sheet) and, by our sales this year, the kids' brand we sell most. The 16-inch weighs 6.2 kg with V-brakes and suits 100–130 cm; the 14-inch is 4.93 kg. Our 2021 video showed sealed-bearing hubs and a quick-release front wheel.
The catch: there is no official spec page, so the 20-inch 8-speed's weight is unconfirmed, and the 24-inch (9.3 kg) has no suspension or stabilisers.
See the Minivelo 16 in four colours, with stock and price; also 14, 20, 20 8-speed and 24 8-speed.
Sooibe: one folding bike that grows with your child
A Hangzhou-based brand of folding bikes with adjustable saddle and bars. Brand figures: the 007 Pro 14-inch is 7.9 kg, rated for 105–175 cm, with fold-up stabilisers; the 009 16-inch has Shimano 6-speed and weighs 9.2 kg; the 005 16-inch has a frame that extends 80 mm (9.0 kg, or about 10.4 kg with stabilisers when we weighed it).
The catch: the height range comes from adjustment, but the wheels stay 14 or 16 inch, and both 16-inch models are about 3 kg heavier than a Minivelo or Frog.
See the Sooibe 009 in three colours, the 007 Pro or the 005.
LanQ: entry price, magnesium frame
Our budget pick, with a one-piece magnesium frame. In our 2024 review the 16-inch (ages 4–6) weighed 8.3 kg with stabilisers; the 18 and 20-inch weighed 8.8 and 9.5 kg and use mechanical disc brakes.
The catch: heavier than Frog or Minivelo, though 1–2 kg lighter than a typical steel entry bike in that review. The 16-inch comes in green or orange only.
See the LanQ 16, 18 or 20.
Pony: Taiwan-made BMX style, most colours
Made in Taiwan, with an ST-type frame that meets the EN 14765 children's bike standard. The Hong Kong distributor rates the 12-inch for 90–105 cm, 14-inch 100–115 cm, 16-inch 105–120 cm and 18-inch 115–130 cm. The 12 and 14-inch each had eight colours in stock.
The catch: the 16-inch is about 9.5 kg, over 3 kg more than a Minivelo 16, and single-speed; stabilisers cost extra.
See the Pony 16 in seven colours, or the 12, 14 and 18.
Frog: light British bikes, while stocks last
Frog sizes by inside leg. The Frog 38 (14-inch) weighs 6.06 kg (6.46 kg with pedals) for ages 3–4; the Frog 44 (16-inch) is 6.39 kg with pedals for ages 4–5, with Tektro short-reach levers; the Frog 53 (20-inch, 8-speed) is 8.15 kg. BikeRadar reported in April 2026 that Frog entered administration in February and could not secure the funding to keep manufacturing in the UK; only the brand, intellectual property and stock were then sold to Frasers Group, which has not announced its plans. Our stock is while it lasts.
The catch: each model covers a narrow age range, and the 38 and 53 come without a kickstand.
See which Frog 44 colours are left, or the Frog 38 and Frog 53.
Giant XTC Jr: a first mountain bike with suspension
Giant rates the XTC Jr 20 for 120–140 cm, with a 50 mm fork, 1×7 twist shifting and V-brakes; the XTC Jr 24 suits 130–150 cm, and the Disc 24 adds mechanical disc brakes.
The catch: Giant does not publish weights for the suspension models, and the rigid XTC Jr 20 Lite is already 11 kg. Cycling Weekly notes most children will not need suspension until they ride an adult bike.
See the XTC Jr 20 in three colours, the 20 Lite, 24 and 24 Disc.
Trek Precaliber 24: eight gears and front suspension
A 45 mm suspension fork, Shimano Tourney 8-speed with a 13–34T cassette and V-brakes, for ages 8–12 and 129.5–149.8 cm (Trek spec on our product page). The rigid Wahoo 24 (9.24 kg) is down to two black bikes.
The catch: at 11.93 kg it is the heaviest example here, a real consideration if it has to go up stairs.
See the Precaliber 24 in four colours or the Wahoo 24.
HASA RTS1: a 700c road bike for kids
From Taiwan's Heng Feng Bicycle: adult 700c wheels on a 40 cm frame, with 152 mm cranks, 360 mm drop bars, SENSAH 2×9 gears and caliper brakes. Our figures: about 9.6 kg without pedals; we suggest it from around 130 cm.
The catch: HASA publishes no rider height, and drop bars with caliper brakes suit confident riders, not learners.
See the RTS1 in gloss white and matt black.
What do you get for paying more?
Mainly less weight, better parts and better resale. Among 16-inch bikes, the Minivelo 16 is 6.2 kg and the Pony 16 about 9.5 kg. Check each product page for today's price.
BikeRadar's buyer's guide says weight matters more for children because they are so much lighter, and recommends the lightest bike you can afford in the right size. Our rule of thumb is no more than a third of the child's weight: a 6.2 kg bike suits a child of about 19 kg and up, a 9.5 kg bike about 29 kg and up. Cycling Weekly adds that cheap kids' bikes use heavier parts to save cost; both titles say good ones hold their resale value, though we have no Hong Kong second-hand data.
Older kids: 24 inch, 26 inch or 700c?
From about 130 cm, choose a 24-inch mountain bike for hills and gravel, or a 700c kids' road bike for longer road rides and triathlon.
24-inch mountain bikes
Giant XTC Jr 24 and Disc 24, Trek Precaliber 24 and Minivelo 24. Giant's 20 and 24-inch ranges overlap at 130–140 cm, so compare saddle height with inside leg.
26-inch road bike
One Frog 70 26-inch road bike is left (9.3 kg, 140 mm cranks, ages 11–14 on our product page).
700c road bike
The HASA RTS1 suits confident riders from about 130 cm; it has one frame size, so check with us near 130 cm or over 150 cm.

Taking a bike on the MTR
The Transport Department's Cycling Information Centre says a bike on the MTR must fit the luggage rule (length, width and height totalling no more than 170 cm, no side over 130 cm), which removing the front wheel can help with. By brand figures the Sooibe 007 Pro folds to 137 cm and the 009 to 155 cm. Franchised buses restrict bikes.

FAQ
What size bike does a 3 or 4-year-old need?
Most start on 12 or 14-inch wheels, but go by height and inside leg: Pony's 12-inch is rated for ages 3–5 (90–105 cm) and the 14-inch Frog 38 for ages 3–4.
Which kids' bike brand is lightest?
Here, the Minivelo 16 (6.2 kg) and Frog 44 (6.39 kg with pedals); the Minivelo 14 is 4.93 kg. Brands weigh differently, so compare roughly.
Do kids' bikes need gears?
Not usually at 16 inch or below; they help from 20 inch on hilly routes. The Sooibe 009 is a rare 16-inch with 6 gears.
How tall should a child be for a kids' road bike?
For the HASA RTS1, we suggest about 130 cm and up. HASA publishes no height range and there is one size only.
Can Jollymap deliver a kids' bike to my home?
Yes. Easy Take arrives assembled: HK$100 to the kerb or HK$200 to your door in most of Hong Kong, per bike; Tung Chung, Ma Wan and Discovery Bay cost more. The final fee is shown at checkout.
