Introduction: Why Did We Travel All the Way to Shenzhen?
Hello fellow riders, it's your Jollymap team once again! Notice how today's setting looks completely different from our usual videos? That's right — in order to bring you an up-close look at a bike that's been generating massive buzz across the entire folding bike community, we made the special trip from Hong Kong straight into Shenzhen, all the way to Funxtron's headquarters office!
Why go through all this trouble? Because recently, whether it's on Facebook groups, cycling forums, or at our Jollymap retail store, we keep getting asked the same question:
"Is the Funxtron F16 folding bike, priced at over HK$10,000, actually worth the money?"
Just looking at official photos and spec sheets doesn't really give you a true feel for a bike's actual quality and details. That's why we decided to visit in person — not only to get hands-on with this bike, but also to interview Funxtron's founder and chief designer, Dingo, and have him personally break down every design decision behind the F16.
This article will give you a comprehensive summary of everything from our Shenzhen trip, including the front suspension structure, frame materials, folding mechanism, wheelset specs, modification flexibility, and real-world ride impressions. Whether you're a seasoned folding bike enthusiast or a newcomer just thinking about getting into the scene, by the end of this article, you'll have a complete understanding of the F16. Ready? Let's dive in!
1. What Is Funxtron? Why Should You Pay Attention?
Before we dive into the F16, let us briefly introduce the Funxtron brand.
Funxtron is a company focused on designing high-performance folding bicycles, with its headquarters based in Shenzhen. Unlike many brands on the market that focus on "affordable mass production," Funxtron takes a different route — "original design + premium materials" — with many of their components being manufactured from their own custom molds, rather than using off-the-shelf generic parts.
This point is actually very important for discerning riders, because custom in-house tooling means:
- Unified and aesthetically pleasing design, with every detail matching the overall style of the bike
- Structural strength can be optimized specifically, without being limited by generic parts
- More precise weight control, allowing for targeted reduction or reinforcement as needed
And today's star, the F16, is Funxtron's flagship folding suspension bike, developed over two years and going through at least six to seven revisions before its final release.
2. The Five Key Design Highlights of the F16
Highlight 1: In-House Developed Linkage-Style Air Suspension Fork (Only 400g!)

The first thing that catches your eye about the F16 is definitely its linkage-style front suspension system. This isn't just some off-the-shelf suspension slapped onto the fork — it's a completely custom-developed solution from Funxtron.
Dingo personally walked us through it:
"This front suspension is air-adjustable, and the internal piston has a dual-layer structure, so it can fully absorb forward impacts. Additionally, all the sealing rubber O-rings are sourced from Japan."
This linkage-style solution was the most difficult part of the entire bike to develop, taking two years and at least six to seven design iterations before settling on the version you see today. Dingo said this is the solution they consider to be the most reliable and also the lightest.

How impressive is the weight?
- Fork weight: 220g
- Suspension body: 220g
- Combined total: only just over 400g
According to Dingo, even with the linkage air suspension fork + carbon fiber fork combination, the total weight is only around 500g — comparable to a standard aluminum fork, but with full suspension functionality. The value-for-money here is truly impressive!
Highlight 2: CNC One-Piece 3D Forged Folding Structure (Tesla-Grade Folding Latch!)

The soul of any folding bike is its folding mechanism. How does the F16 measure up?
Dingo picked up the bike to explain: this folding component uses 3D forging + CNC machining as a single integrated piece, with no visible welding marks. The advantages of this manufacturing method are extremely high structural strength combined with a beautiful appearance.
But what impressed us most was the folding latch design. When we first saw this bike at the Shanghai Bike Show, our strongest impression was:
The folding latch is completely flush with the frame — it doesn't stick out at all.
It feels just like a Tesla door handle, hidden within the body of the bike, seamlessly integrated. Operation is also incredibly simple:
- Press the button on top
- Flick it outward
- Open — done!
Closing it is just as easy — one press and it's locked. The upper joint section is also a forged piece, and it's been hand-polished to match the frame, making the whole bike look genuinely unified.
Highlight 3: T800 Carbon Fiber Rear Fork + PU Elastomer (200g Lighter Than a Brompton!)

Moving on to the back of the bike — the F16's carbon fiber rear fork uses T800-grade carbon fiber, which is stiffer than the more common T700.
Why T800? Dingo explained:
"Because we're using an arched/bow-shaped design, and carbon fiber already has natural flex. Combined with the PU elastomer, the ride feels much more comfortable — it has a springy, 'Q'-like quality."
In terms of weight, the rear fork comes in at 360-380g. Compared to a traditional folding bike like the Brompton, that's a full 200g lighter or more! For riders who prioritize lightweight builds, this is fantastic news.
Compatibility is also excellent: The F16's suspension uses the Brompton-standard specification, so if you want to upgrade to a higher-grade shock, no problem at all — the modification flexibility is huge.
Highlight 4: In-House Developed Crankset + Standard Specs for Modification Flexibilit

The F16's crankset is also developed in-house by Funxtron. The entire crank arm weighs only just over 400g, achieved through a hollowed-out design for weight reduction, while perfectly matching the bike's industrial design aesthetic.
Most importantly, although custom-designed, the dimensions fully comply with standard specifications. Riders can swap in Shimano or other brand components freely — the modification flexibility is exceptionally high. For DIY enthusiasts and riders who love upgrading their components, this is a major plus.
Highlight 5: Countless Thoughtful Details
Beyond the core highlights above, the F16 has many thoughtful small design touches:
🚴 Standard Garmin Computer Mount
Compatible with cycling computers or smartphones — convenient for GPS navigation or ride data tracking.

☕ Front Dual Cup Holder / Storage Expansion Points
Dingo specifically added two expansion points at the head tube position, capable of holding water bottles, coffee cups, or even storage bags. This is genuinely thoughtful design! As everyone knows, Bromptons and other tri-fold bikes generally don't have water bottle mounts. The F16 not only has them, but offers two positions, with the middle spot able to hold other accessories — massive flexibility.

💺 Taiwan Velo Grips + Carefully Selected Saddle
Dingo shared that he tested many different grip styles in Taiwan before ultimately choosing Velo grips. After testing them ourselves, we can confirm they're excellent — the grip feel is much more comfortable than the common "ergonomic ball" designs, allowing your palm to rest fully on the grip support, so long rides don't cause fatigue. The saddle has also been carefully selected. Compared to certain brand saddles that riders frequently complain are "too hard," the F16's saddle is genuinely comfortable to sit on.

🛠️ Multi-Purpose Head Tube Bracket
This bracket serves multiple functions:
- Ensures zero play between fork and suspension — extremely solid once the two bolts are tightened
- Includes a Brompton "pig nose" standard interface for attaching various front bags
- Reserved light mount position
- Reserved rack expansion holes — no tools needed for installation or removal
📦 Rear Rack + 3D Printed Fenders
Many customers worry whether the F16's rear fork design can accommodate a rack. The answer is absolutely yes! Funxtron has reserved two expansion holes on the rear fork, and the rack can be secured with a single bolt for easy DIY installation and removal.

Here's another amazing feature: Funxtron will open-source the 3D printing data for the fenders and rack. That means if you have access to 3D printing technology, you can download the files and DIY print your own custom fenders! For riders who love personalization, this is a paradise.

4. 10-Second Speed Fold Test
Dingo demonstrated the folding process on the spot, and the result was astonishing — from start to finish, it took less than 10 seconds!
The folding steps are similar to a Brompton, but there are a few tips to note:
- First, fold the rear wheel forward — the wheel should be on the left side
- Fold the head tube down first, using your hand to support the handlebar area
- Flick with your hand to lock the handlebar into the fixed position
- Give it a light press to complete
Unfolding is even easier — just grab and pull, and you're done. Super smooth. For Hong Kong riders who need to take the MTR, buses, or fit their bike into a car trunk daily, this folding speed is a huge advantage.
5. Is the Funxtron F16 Worth Buying? Jollymap's Verdict
After all that, is the F16 worth spending over HK$10,000 on? Here's the Jollymap team's conclusion:
✅ Who Should Buy It:
