Standard, Wide or Narrow? Shimano explains
Video: “SHIMANO DYNALAST 2.0 Fit Systems Explained” from Shimano’s official YouTube channel.
Why a wide-fit road shoe matters
If your toes go numb on a long climb, or you feel hot spots across the ball of your foot after an hour, your shoes are probably too narrow — not too small. Many riders with wider feet end up sizing up to get relief, only to find their heel slipping and power leaking on every pedal stroke. Hong Kong’s heat makes it worse: feet swell as the ride goes on, and a shoe that felt fine at the start can pinch by the time you reach Tai Mo Shan or the far end of Sai Kung.
The SH-RC810 Wide solves this at the source. Its DYNALAST 2.0 Wide last adds width and toe-box volume while keeping the heel and midfoot secure, so you can wear your true size and still let your toes spread naturally.
Who is the SH-RC810 Wide for?
- Riders whose feet feel squeezed, numb or hot in standard road shoes
- Riders who have been sizing up to get enough width
- Riders upgrading to a stiff carbon sole for racing, group rides or long training days
- Riders moving to Shimano’s new SPD-SLR pedal system who want the full low-stack benefit
If your feet are narrow or average, the SH-RC810 Standard or SH-RC810 Narrow will give you a closer fit.
SH-RC810 Standard vs Wide vs Narrow
The three SH-RC810 versions differ only in the last, so the right one depends on your foot shape:
| SH-RC810 Standard | SH-RC810 Wide (this page) | SH-RC810 Narrow | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last | DYNALAST 2.0 Standard | DYNALAST 2.0 Wide | DYNALAST 2.0 Narrow |
| Forefoot and toe room | Roomier than the previous Standard last | Roomiest of the three, wider than the previous Wide and Standard lasts | Snuggest wrap of the three |
| Best for | Most riders with average-width feet | Wider feet, or riders whose forefoot gets squeezed or toes go numb | Narrower feet or heels that lift; many women riders find it fits best |

What makes the SH-RC810 Wide worth it
DYNALAST 2.0 Wide: room where your foot needs it

SHIMANO DYNALAST 2.0 gives a wider forefoot, a more generous toe box and reduced toe spring, letting your toes splay naturally under load. Less pressure across the foot means less fatigue late in the ride — and the Wide version is noticeably roomier than Shimano’s previous Wide and Standard fits.
Stiff carbon sole on the new SPD-SLR platform

A rigid, hollow-channel carbon midsole (stiffness index 11) turns effort into speed, while the hollow channels vent air and drain water — useful in Hong Kong’s humid summers and sudden downpours. The sole is built around Shimano’s new SPD-SLR platform: paired with SPD-SLR pedals and cleats, it brings your foot closer to the pedal axle for a more direct, stable connection, and offers an extra-wide cleat adjustment range with clearer alignment markings.
Dual BOA® Li2 dials for an even wrap
Two low-profile BOA® Li2 dials let you fine-tune tension over the forefoot and instep separately, in small clicks, even while riding. The surround-wrapping upper spreads that tension evenly from toe to instep.
A heel that stays put, and pads you can replace
An external heel stabiliser and extended midsole keep your foot in position during sprints and steep climbs. When the heel pads wear down from walking to the café, they can be replaced — extending the life of the shoe.
How to choose your size

- Measure your foot length in centimetres, following the steps on the chart.
- Match it to your EU size on the conversion chart. Shimano notes that cycling shoes should be snug — if you fall between sizes, go up.
- If you have previously sized up in Shimano shoes just to get more width, Shimano recommends trying half a size smaller in the Wide fit.
Jollymap tip: Foot length is only half the story — width, arch and how your foot sits on the pedal all matter. Our Jollymap Bike Fit service measures your foot length and width and recommends the right cycling shoe size, and we can set up your cleats at the same time. Already have your shoes? Book our Shoe Cleats Setup service: we set the position and angle of your cleats from your foot length, width and metatarsal position in about 20–30 minutes (bring your own shoes and cleats). The service covers Shimano SPD-SL cleats; if you use SPD-SLR cleats, please check with us first.
Pedal and cleat compatibility

The SH-RC810 sole accepts both SPD-SLR and SPD-SL cleats, so the right choice depends on your pedals:
- On SPD-SLR pedals (such as Ultegra PD-R8200): fit SPD-SLR cleats for the lowest stack height. SPD-SLR is Shimano’s first major change to its road pedal interface since 2003: engagement drops from 15.5° to 10.5° for easier clip-in, and SPD-SLR cleats need no spacers, making them up to 22% lighter.
- Keeping your SPD-SL pedals (such as the Ultegra PD-R8000 or 105 PD-R7000): simply fit SPD-SL cleats — no need to change pedals. SPD-SL cleats in our shop: SM-SH10 (red, fixed), SM-SH12 (blue, 2° float) and SM-SH11 (yellow, 6° float).
The key rule: SPD-SLR pedals only work with SPD-SLR cleats, and SPD-SL pedals only work with SPD-SL cleats. Cleats are not included with the SH-RC810 and are sold separately.
| SPD-SLR cleat | Float | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| CL-SL100 (red) | Fixed, 0° | Maximum power transfer, sprinters |
| CL-SL120 (blue) | Narrow float | Riders who want a little movement with a precise feel |
| CL-SL110 (yellow) | Moderate float | Most riders; kinder on the knees |
| CL-SL130 (grey) | — | Non-Shimano 3-hole shoes on SPD-SLR pedals |

FAQ
What is the difference between the Wide and Standard SH-RC810?
The Wide version uses the DYNALAST 2.0 Wide last, with more width across the forefoot and a larger toe box. The sole, closure and materials are the same. Shimano says the new Wide fit is roomier than both its previous Wide and Standard fits.
Should I size down in the Wide fit?
Only if you previously sized up for width. Shimano suggests riders who went up a size just for more room try half a size smaller in the new Wide fit. If you are unsure, a Jollymap Bike Fit measures both length and width.
Can I use my current Shimano SPD-SL pedals with the SH-RC810?
Yes. Shimano lists the SH-RC810 as compatible with SPD-SL cleats, so you can fit SPD-SL cleats and keep your current pedals; most riders get on well with the SM-SH11 yellow 6° float cleats. For the lowest stack height, switch to SPD-SLR pedals and cleats.
Are cleats included?
No. The SH-RC810 is sold without cleats, so please add SPD-SLR or SPD-SL cleats to match your pedals.
Which SPD-SLR cleat should I choose?
Most riders are best served by the yellow CL-SL110 with moderate float, which lets the knees move naturally. Choose the blue CL-SL120 for a more precise feel, or the red CL-SL100 for zero float.
Will the SH-RC810 cope with Hong Kong’s heat and rain?
Yes. The hollow-channel carbon midsole vents air and drains water, and the synthetic upper is breathable. After wet rides, remove the insoles and let the shoes dry naturally, away from direct heat.
Can I replace the heel pads?
Yes. The SH-RC810 has replaceable heel pads, so worn pads do not mean replacing the shoes.
How does the SH-RC810 compare with the S-PHYRE RC910?
The SH-RC810 borrows key technology from Shimano’s flagship S-PHYRE RC910 — DYNALAST 2.0, dual BOA® dials and a low-stack carbon sole — at a lower price point. The RC910 adds a carbon heel cup and Shimano’s Carbon Hollow Core midsole for riders chasing every last gram.
