Entry-Level Road Bikes in Hong Kong 2026: 8 Picks from About HK$4,000
Posted by Jason - 2025-04-11T00:00:00.000+08:00 - 2025 Road Bike recommedation

Last updated: 9 October 2026 (rewritten for 2026 as eight road bikes we stock or can order, with online prices, a budget chart, a weight comparison and Hong Kong's legal requirements; the Trek with only one size left was removed after a stock check the same day)
An entry-level road bike in Hong Kong starts at HK$3,980 in our online shop (Camp Radon X, October 2026 price). Between HK$5,000 and HK$9,000 you get aluminium bikes from Merida, Giant and Camp, and a carbon frame starts at HK$12,900.
Once you have a budget, look at three things: the groupset, rim or disc brakes, and whether the frame size fits you. All eight bikes below were in stock or available to order when we rechecked on 9 October 2026, and we note who each bike does not suit.
Key points
- Cheapest: the Camp Radon X at HK$3,980, with Shimano Sora 2x9 derailleurs and hydraulic disc brakes; listed as available, but confirm the delivery date before you buy.
- HK$5,396 to HK$6,840: the Merida Scultura Rim 100 and Giant Contend 1 add a carbon fork but use rim brakes.
- Entry carbon: the HASA Coraggio 105 at HK$12,900 weighs a claimed 8.94 kg (size not stated), with Shimano 105 12-speed and hydraulic discs.
- Hong Kong law requires a bell and working brakes, plus a white front and red rear light at night. Helmets are not yet compulsory.
How much does an entry-level road bike cost in 2026?
Based on our online prices on 8 October 2026, entry road bikes fall into four bands. Around HK$4,000 buys an aluminium frame and fork with 9-speed gears and disc brakes. HK$5,000 to HK$7,000 adds a carbon fork but keeps rim brakes. Around HK$8,000 gets you a carbon fork and disc brakes, and carbon frames with Shimano 105 12-speed start at HK$12,900.
We had no new adult road bike under HK$3,000 when writing; the Radon X at HK$3,980 was the cheapest. Several models are pre-order stock, so for anything marked "pre-order" below, contact us first to confirm the delivery date.
How should a beginner choose? Gears, brakes and size
Check the groupset level, then the brake type, then make sure the frame size matches your height and inseam. Colour and brand come last.
Groupsets: 8, 9, 10 or 12 speeds
These eight bikes use four Shimano levels: Claris 8-speed (Merida Scultura Rim 100), Sora 9-speed (Camp Radon X, Java Auriga, Giant Contend 1 and Contend AR 3), Tiagra 10-speed (Camp SR5 Sport) and 105 12-speed (HASA Coraggio, Giant Defy Advanced 2). More speeds means smaller jumps between gears. BikeRadar's test of the Claris 8-speed on a Trek Domane AL 2 called it "relatively gappy" next to groupsets with more gears, though very efficient when clean and set up well. For climbing, the Giant Contend models pair a 34/50T crankset with an 11-34T cassette, and a bigger largest sprocket means easier hills. In our Contend vs SCR video (in Cantonese), Jason points out that the Contend's 34T sprocket is six teeth bigger than the old SCR's 28T, a real help on climbs for riders still building leg strength.
Rim brakes, mechanical discs and hydraulic discs
BikeRadar's disc brake guide (August 2025) says disc braking is far more consistent in changing weather, while rim brakes are lighter and easy to adjust and repair. Hong Kong is wet: the Observatory's 1991–2020 average is 2,431.2 mm of rain a year, with June the wettest month, so discs make sense if you often ride after rain.
Not all discs are equal. The Giant Contend AR 3 uses Tektro mechanical (cable) discs. BikeRadar's test of the same style of brake on a Trek Domane AL 2 called it "a long way from" hydraulic performance. The Radon X, SR5 Sport, Coraggio and Defy Advanced 2 have hydraulic discs. Tyre room differs too: the rim-brake Merida takes 25 mm tyres at most, the Contend 1 is listed at 28 mm by Giant Taiwan, and the disc Contend AR 3 takes 38 mm.
Size: go by height and inseam
Brands label sizes differently, so use each brand's height chart. The Merida Scultura Rim 100 comes in nine sizes, with 4XS for riders under 152 cm; the Giant Contend AR 3 starts at size S (165–175 cm). If you fall between sizes, compare stack and reach, or book a Jollymap bike fit.
Aluminium or carbon: is entry carbon worth it?
Going by the brands' own figures, the two carbon bikes here (8.65–8.94 kg) are roughly half a kilo to 1.2 kg lighter than the aluminium ones with a published weight (9.47–9.8 kg), but sizes and weighing methods differ, so treat that as a rough guide. Carbon starts at HK$12,900. Below HK$9,000, an aluminium frame with a carbon fork is the realistic choice.
Claimed weights: Giant Defy Advanced 2 (2025) 8.65 kg in size S, pedals not stated; HASA Coraggio 105 8.94 kg, size and pedals not stated; Merida Scultura Rim 100 9.47 kg (size M-L, no pedals); Camp lists the Radon X at about 9.8 kg in a small size, without pedals. The 1.2 kg gap between the lightest and heaviest compares a size S with a small frame, so it is not like for like.
BikeRadar's aluminium road bike guide notes that aluminium bikes are usually cheaper, sometimes ride better than similarly priced carbon bikes, and that carbon frames are easier to damage in a crash, with damage that can be hard to spot. Aluminium is not always the budget option, though: the Cannondale CAAD13 105 (pre-order) costs HK$18,500, more than the carbon Coraggio. Our view: if you are not yet sure how much you will ride, start with an aluminium bike at HK$4,000 to HK$9,000 and move to carbon once you ride every week.

Camp Radon X: hydraulic discs under HK$4,000
Camp lists an internally routed aluminium frame, aluminium fork, Shimano Sora R3000 derailleurs, non-Shimano 2x9 levers with integrated hydraulic brakes and a 34/50T crankset, at about 9.8 kg in a small size without pedals. We stock 460 to 540 mm frames, which the supplier suggests for riders of about 160–190 cm.
Keep in mind: the shifters are not Shimano. In our Radon X video (in Cantonese), Jason says they do not feel as good as Shimano 105 or above, but work about as well as Sora or Claris; his 49 cm test bike weighed about 10.61 kg with pedals. Camp also notes that some parts change between production batches; check rim depth and tyre width before buying.

Java Auriga: aero looks for HK$4,280
An aero aluminium frame and aluminium fork with internal cabling, Shimano Sora R3000 2x9 (18 speeds) and disc brakes, according to Java's archived 2023 product page, which says the aero frame and lower riding position cut drag by 5–10%. We stock sizes 47 to 54 in four colours.
Keep in mind: Java publishes no weight for this version and does not say whether the discs are hydraulic or mechanical. The Auriga now on Java's website is a different 12-speed version.

Merida Scultura Rim 100: the widest size range
Merida's spec: Scultura Lite aluminium frame, Scultura Rim CF2 carbon fork, Shimano Claris 2x8, FSA Tempo 50-34T and an 11-28T cassette, Lee Chi dual-pivot rim brakes, 9.47 kg (size M-L, no pedals). Nine sizes from 4XS (under 152 cm) to XL make it the best fit here for smaller riders.
Keep in mind: this is the 2021 model with rim brakes and a 25 mm tyre limit. Merida's current Scultura Rim 100 has moved to Shimano CUES 2x9.

Giant Contend 1 (2024): a big-brand alloy starter
Giant Taiwan's spec: ALUXX aluminium frame, Advanced-grade carbon fork, Shimano Sora 2x9 with 34/50T and 11-34T, Tektro TK-B177 rim brakes and 700x28c tyres. We stock XS to M/L, which Giant suggests for 157–187 cm. For how it compares with the old SCR, read our Giant Contend review.
Keep in mind: Giant publishes no weight for the 2024 model; it has rim brakes, a listed 28 mm tyre limit and only one colour (burgundy).
See Contend 1 sizes and pre-order details
Giant Contend AR 3 (2024): wide tyres and discs for rough roads
AR stands for All-Rounder. Giant's spec: ALUXX aluminium frame, carbon fork, 12 mm thru-axles, Shimano Sora 2x9 with 11-34T, Tektro MD-C550 mechanical discs with 160 mm rotors, 700x32c tyres and 38 mm clearance. Giant USA lists the 2025 model, with the same parts, at 9.97 kg in size M.
Keep in mind: the smallest size is S (165–175 cm), and mechanical discs feel and adjust differently from hydraulics.

Camp SR5 Sport: power meter and GPS computer included
This version has Shimano Tiagra 2x10 with hydraulic discs, a Magene SPX1 power-meter crankset (50/34T) and a Magene C416 GPS computer. The frame is aluminium; the fork, seatpost and integrated bar are carbon. Our product data puts it at about 9.6 kg without pedals, and five sizes cover roughly 157–191 cm.
Keep in mind: only six remain (Honda grey, a beige shade, in 46, 49 and 51; pearl white in 49). Magene's international site does not list the SPX1, so power-meter details come from promotional images, and tyre width is listed as either 28C or 30C.

HASA Coraggio 105: carbon from HK$12,900
HASA is a Taiwanese brand based in Kaohsiung. Its website lists a T800 carbon frame, full carbon fork, carbon integrated bar, Shimano 105 2x12 mechanical gears and 105 hydraulic discs; the version with Boreas A28D alloy wheels weighs 8.94 kg.
Keep in mind: this price is for the alloy-wheel version; the carbon-wheel version (8.83 kg claimed) is HK$13,580. The bar and stem are one piece, so changing reach or width means replacing the whole unit.

Giant Defy Advanced 2 (2025): lightest, built for long rides
The Defy is Giant's endurance road bike. Giant USA's 2025 spec: Advanced-grade carbon frame and fork, Shimano 105 with an 11-36T cassette, 105 hydraulic discs and Gavia Fondo 1 tubeless 700x32c tyres, at 8.65 kg in size S, the lightest bike here.
Keep in mind: at HK$16,300 it is the most expensive of the eight, and it still comes with alloy wheels. The spec above is from Giant USA; Hong Kong colours differ, so check our product page.

What else do you need? Hong Kong rules and basic kit
Hong Kong law requires a bell and working brakes on every bicycle, and a white front light and red rear light at night or in poor visibility. Helmets are not yet compulsory, but we strongly recommend one.
Regulation 51(6) of the Road Traffic (Traffic Control) Regulations (Cap 374G) says no one may ride a bicycle on a road at night or in poor visibility unless it shows a white light at the front and a red light at the rear; CLIC notes a fine of up to HK$2,000. Under the Road Traffic (Construction and Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations (Cap 374A), regulation 88 requires a bell that gives sufficient warning, and regulation 87 requires working brakes: a bike with wheels over 460 mm in diameter that can freewheel, which covers normal road bikes, needs separate front and rear brakes. Road bikes do not always come with a bell, so check and fit one.
The Transport Department's Road Users' Code also bars cyclists from expressways, tunnel areas and control areas, and from riding on footpaths; where a cycle track exists, you must use it. On helmets, see our article on Hong Kong's bike helmet law and choosing a helmet.
Many claimed road bike weights are without pedals, so ask whether pedals are included; flat pedals are fine to start. Add a lock, a spare tube and a pump. See our road helmets and accessories.
FAQ
Can I buy a new road bike for HK$3,000?
Not from our shop at the time of writing (8 October 2026); the cheapest adult road bike was the HK$3,980 Camp Radon X. On a tighter budget, consider a city bike, or a second-hand bike checked by someone who knows bikes.
Is a flat-bar road bike good for beginners?
A flat-bar road bike swaps drop bars for a straight bar, so it handles like an everyday bike and suits cycle tracks and commuting. The trade-off is that you cannot tuck as low, so you face more wind resistance at speed or into a headwind. See our city bikes.
Can I ride a road bike on Hong Kong's cycle tracks?
Yes, and where a cycle track exists the Road Users' Code says you must use it. The code also says not to stop or rest on a cycle track. Road bikes are quick, so slow down at bends and junctions, and use lights after dark.
