Who is it for?
The Launch D8 suits riders who mostly commute or ride for leisure on flat routes and want a folding bike with 20-inch wheels. With one chainring and 8 speeds you only use the rear shifter, which is simpler than a double-chainring setup. For more gears and longer, faster rides, compare the 18-speed Dahon K-One double-chainring FDA083. If you often carry the bike up stairs or onto public transport, the lighter Dahon K3 Plus 349 16-inch 9-Speed Folding Bike (about 10.44 kg) or Dahon K3 14-inch 3-Speed Folding Bike KAA433 (7.9 kg without pedals) will be easier.
Our shop also lists the Dahon Launch D8 (KBA083) 8-speed disc folding bike (Jaws Hinge). Both are 8-speed with disc brakes and an aluminium frame, and Dahon lists both at 12.1kg; the difference is the folding hinge (see the comparison table below for folded sizes).

Jollymap's advice
For flat commuting and leisure rides, the Launch D8's single-chainring 8 speeds and disc brakes are all you need. If you often take a folding bike on the MTR, note that its folded size exceeds the MTR luggage limit (see the FAQ below). Not sure it suits your height, routes and storage space? Chat with us or message our Facebook page before ordering, with your height, usual routes and where you will store the bike.
FAQ
How much does the Dahon Launch D8 weigh?
12.1 kg, as published by Dahon Hong Kong. Dahon does not say whether this includes pedals, and actual weight can vary slightly by batch and measuring tool.
What is the folded size of the Dahon Launch D8?
L 82 x W 38 x H 64 cm, according to Dahon Hong Kong. Actual measurements may differ slightly depending on the measuring method.
Can I take the Dahon Launch D8 on the MTR?
Not when simply folded; you would need to remove the front wheel. MTR luggage must not exceed 170 cm in total length, width and height, with no side over 130 cm, and the Launch D8's official folded size adds up to about 184 cm. According to the Transport Department, a folding bike that does not comply may be taken in with the front wheel removed. Franchised buses are limited by section 14 of the Public Bus Services Regulations (Cap. 230A): free luggage is capped at 5 kg and 0.1 cubic metres, which a folding bike usually exceeds.
What is the difference between the Launch D8 and the Speed P8?
Both are 20-inch, 8-speed folding bikes. The Launch D8 has an aluminium frame and disc brakes and weighs 12.1 kg; the Speed P8 has a Cr-Mo steel frame and V-brakes, weighs 12.7 kg and folds to L 81 x W 31 x H 66.5 cm, 7 cm narrower than the Launch D8.
What is the difference between the Launch D8 and the K-One double-chainring version?

The K-One double-chainring version has a 53/39T double chainring with 18 speeds and 451 wheels, weighs 11.95 kg with pedals, and offers more gear choices for speed and longer rides. Both are 20-inch with aluminium frames and disc brakes.
What is the difference between the standard-hinge and Jaws Hinge versions?
Both are the Launch D8 KBA083, with 8-speed gearing, disc brakes, an aluminium frame and a Dahon-listed weight of 12.1kg; the difference is the style of the frame's folding hinge. This page is the version Dahon Hong Kong lists as the standard hinge, folding to 82 x 38 x 64cm; the Launch D8 (Jaws Hinge) folds to 82 x 39 x 62cm according to Dahon's global site. Dahon describes the Jaws hinge as the next evolution of its LockJaw technology, with sturdy teeth that lock the frame in place. Please contact us before ordering if you would like to know how the two hinges differ in use.
Can I buy a replacement rear wheel for the Launch D8?
Yes. Our shop lists the Dahon KBA083 Rear Disc Brake Wheel, which carries the same KBA083 model code as the Launch D8. Please check with us before ordering to confirm it fits your bike.
What is the maximum load and recommended rider height?
Dahon Hong Kong does not publish a maximum load or rider height range for the Launch D8. If you are near the usual limits for a folding bike, please contact us before ordering.
