Video: Java Neo 12-speed purple electronic-shift special edition walkthrough (Jollymap YouTube channel, Cantonese)

The Java NEO 12s 16 inch 349 is the 12-speed electronic-shift version of Java's NEO tri-fold bike: an aluminium frame with a carbon fork, Wheeltop 12-speed wireless electronic shifting, an 11–40T cassette, a 50T hollow crankset and hydraulic disc brakes, at about 10 kg. Shifting is a press of a button, the 40T cog helps on Hong Kong's hills, and you keep the compact fold of a 16-inch 349 bike.

Key Facts

The Problem It Solves

With mechanical shifting, the gear cable stretches over time and starts skipping, so it needs regular adjustment. The Java NEO 12s uses Wheeltop wireless electronic shifting: press a button and a motor makes the shift, with no cable to stretch. Twelve speeds are more closely spaced than nine, making it easier to find a comfortable cadence, and the 40T largest cog gives you an easier gear for steep climbs. Jollymap's review notes that the NEO was designed around a standard rear derailleur mount, leaving room for upgrades, which is how Java was able to offer this 12-speed electronic version.

Who It Suits

Key Features

Wheeltop TX wireless electronic shifting

The Wheeltop TX road electronic groupset has just two buttons on the lever for up and down shifts, and needs no wires, so the cockpit and frame look clean.

12 speeds with an 11–40T range

The real gain of 12 speeds is closer steps between gears, so it is easier to keep a smooth cadence when accelerating on the flat or climbing. Paired with a 50T CNC hollow chainring and 165 mm cranks, the 40T largest cog makes a big difference on climbs.

Carbon fork and hydraulic disc brakes

The carbon fork is lighter than an aluminium one and filters out fine road buzz, so your hands tire less on rides over an hour. Brakes are Java's own DECA CNC-machined aluminium hydraulic discs, with a light, linear feel that stays stable on long descents.

Purple Special Edition: carbon upgrades

According to Jollymap's review, the purple colourway is a one-off limited edition that will not be produced again. The delivered bikes go further than first announced: a carbon riser bar with 2 cm rise (with a four-bolt stem cap), plus a carbon stem and head post, and a flat, aero-shaped carbon fork with multiple mounting holes for a front rack or luggage. The carbon parts and DECA calipers are painted to match the frame, and it weighs about 9.6 kg with pedals, about 600 g lighter than a typical 9-speed version at about 10.2 kg.

The same spec (aluminium frame, carbon fork, Wheeltop 12-speed 11–40T) also comes in a limited polished-silver finish: the Java NEO 16" Folding Bike Chrome Limited Edition. For a walk-through of the whole range, see Jollymap's article Java Neo folding bike family guide (in Chinese).

Jollymap Recommends

Shift to the lowest gear (largest cog) before folding a NEO to avoid dropping the chain, and push the folded bike forwards, not backwards, so the cranks don't turn and jam a pedal against the wheel or frame. The stock saddle is firm; for longer rides consider the Air Seat 1 AFT Suspension Saddle. For easier parking, add the Mr TiParts Aluminum Kickstand for Java Neo 16 inch or the Mr TiParts Carbon Kickstand for Java Neo 16inch. The newer, longer brake hoses allow an 80–100 mm M-bar, so taller riders or those who like to sit upright can raise the bars. FAQ

How much does the Java NEO 12s weigh?

About 10 kg. Jollymap's review measured the 12-speed electronic version at about 9.9 kg, about 200 g lighter than the regular 9-speed version; the Purple Special Edition weighs about 9.6 kg with pedals (Jollymap measured).

What is the difference between the Java NEO 12-speed electronic and 9-speed versions?

The drivetrain and cassette range. The 12s uses Wheeltop 12-speed wireless electronic shifting with an 11–40T cassette, shifting by button with no cable; the 9-speed versions use mechanical shifting with 11–32T, such as the Java NEO 9S 16 inch (Carbon Fork version). The 12s and the carbon-fork 9S both have an aluminium frame, carbon fork, 349 wheels and hydraulic disc brakes.

What colours does the Java NEO 12s come in, and what is special about the purple one?

Our shop lists Titanium, White Red, Matt Orange, Sakura White (Limited Edition) and the Purple Special Edition. The purple bike is a one-off limited colour with a carbon handlebar, stem and head post, a flat aero carbon fork with mounting holes, and carbon parts and calipers painted to match; it weighs about 9.6 kg with pedals.

How does the NEO 12s differ from the carbon J Air EX12?

Mainly frame material and weight. The Java NEO J Air Carbon EX12 16 inch Folding Bike has a carbon frame, fork, handlebar, stem and seatpost, about 8.35 kg with pedals in Jollymap's review; the 12s on this page has an aluminium frame with a carbon fork at about 10 kg. Both use Wheeltop 12-speed electronic shifting, an 11–40T cassette and a 50T crankset with 165 mm cranks.

Should I choose the 16-inch 349 or 20-inch 406 electronic version?

If you often fold onto the MTR or have little storage space, choose 16-inch; if you are taller (for example over 180 cm) or cruise long distances, choose 20-inch. Jollymap measured the bar height at about 100 cm on the 20-inch and about 92 cm on the 16-inch. See the Java NEO 20 inch Electric Shift 12 Speed Folding Bike, which also moves from 165 mm to 170 mm cranks. Jollymap's article Java Neo 20 vs 16: what's different? (in Chinese) compares the two sizes in detail.

Can I take it on the MTR or a bus when folded?

Based on Java's official folded size for the same aluminium 16-inch NEO, it should be within the MTR luggage limit (Java does not say whether pedals are included). Java lists 69 x 30.5 x 58 cm, about 157.5 cm in total, within the MTR's 170 cm total-dimension limit with no side over 130 cm. On franchised buses, the Public Bus Services Regulations (Cap. 230A) section 14 only allows free carriage of items within 5 kg and 0.1 m³, which a whole bike exceeds, so it is up to the bus company and driver; minibuses make no guarantee either.

Can I change the stock saddle and handlebar?

Yes. The stock saddle is firm, and Jollymap recommends the Air Seat 1 AFT Suspension Saddle; the newer, longer brake hoses allow an 80–100 mm M-bar to raise the bars. If you adjust the carbon bar on the Purple Special Edition yourself, tighten bolts in a diagonal pattern and keep to the torque limit.

Does electronic shifting need cable adjustment?

No. Wheeltop wireless electronic shifting has no shift cable, so there is no cable stretch to cause skipping. After riding in the rain, still wipe the chain and cassette dry and re-lube.

Where can I buy the Java NEO 12s in Hong Kong?

It is available from the Jollymap online shop and store. To check colours or specification, chat with us or message our Jollymap Facebook page before ordering.
