The Java NEO 14" Electric Shift 5-Speed is the 14-inch electronic-shifting version of Java's NEO tri-fold folding bike: an aluminium alloy frame with a carbon fibre fork, 5-speed electronic shifting (11/13/15/17/19T), a 50T one-piece crankset with 145 mm cranks and hydraulic disc brakes. It keeps the small folded size of the 14" NEO while upgrading to a carbon fork and going from 3 to 5 gears, so it suits city riders with limited storage space who want a couple of extra gears for flyover ramps and gentle climbs.

Whether it's your daily commute, a weekend ride along the cycling trail, or pairing with public transport, the Java NEO 14" electric shift version fits into your urban rhythm.

Key Facts

What problem does it solve?

The biggest advantage of a 14" folding bike is how small it folds – small enough to slide under a bed, under a desk or into a car boot. But the 3-speed 14" NEO only has three gears (11–17T), which can feel hard work on flyover ramps or longer gentle climbs. The electric shift version adds two gears: the largest cog goes from 17T to 19T while the smallest stays at 11T, so you keep the same top speed on the flat and gain easier gears for climbing. Shifting is electronic – an electronic signal drives the rear derailleur, so one press of the button changes gear and there is no gear cable to stretch and cause skipping.

Who is it for?

Features

Carbon fibre fork: lighter front end, less road buzz

This version replaces the aluminium fork of the 3-speed 14" with a carbon fibre fork. In Jollymap's review of the NEO range, the carbon fork not only reduces front-end weight but also filters out the fine, high-frequency vibration from paving bricks and speed bumps – on rides longer than an hour, it noticeably reduces hand fatigue.

5-speed electronic shifting: push-button gear changes

The electronic shifter sends a signal to drive the rear derailleur, so gear changes are fast and precise, without the skipping that comes from stretched gear cables on mechanical systems. The 5-speed cassette (11/13/15/17/19T) paired with the 50T chainring gives you a suitable gear from flat cruising to flyover ramps.

14" NEO frame: short chainstays, long wheelbase

In Jollymap's review of the 14" NEO (3-speed version), we measured: bottom bracket to rear axle about 25 cm (about 35 cm on the 16"), bottom bracket height about 24 cm (about 26 cm on the 16"), wheelbase about 94 cm (about 86 cm on a Dahon K3) and handlebar height about 95 cm. The short chainstays make pedalling feel responsive, while the long wheelbase and low bottom bracket help straight-line stability. The short 145 mm cranks combined with the low bottom bracket reduce the chance of a pedal scraping the ground in corners. These figures were measured on the 3-speed version with an aluminium fork; this version's fork differs, so treat them as a guide.

Hydraulic disc brakes and folding details

Every member of the Java NEO family comes with hydraulic disc brakes, which feel light and linear – reassuring on Hong Kong's long descents and in sudden traffic. Jollymap's review of the 14" NEO (3-speed version) also noted two details: a single-side quick-release pedal for easier folding and storage, and a stock saddle that is noticeably softer than on earlier Java models, which suits relaxed riding.

14" electric 5-speed or 3-speed: which one?

Both are 14" NEOs; the main differences are the fork material and the drivetrain:

Both have a 50T chainring, 145 mm cranks and hydraulic disc brakes. If you often climb or ride further, consider the 16" Java NEO 9S 16 inch 349 9 Speeds Folding Bike (9-speed, 11–32T). For an in-depth look at the 14" NEO, read Jollymap's Java Neo 14" Review: Pros, Cons & Is It Worth Buying?

Jollymap's Advice

Before folding a NEO, shift into the lowest gear (the largest cog) to reduce the chance of the chain dropping; once folded, push the bike forwards rather than pulling it backwards, so the cranks don't turn and jam a pedal against the wheel or frame. This model comes in one frame size; riders over 175 cm, or who prefer a higher saddle, may want a longer seatpost. If you're unsure whether it suits your height, please contact us before ordering (with your height and inseam), or message the Jollymap Facebook page.

FAQ

What's the difference between the Java NEO 14" electric 5-speed and the 3-speed?

The fork and the drivetrain. The electric 5-speed has a carbon fibre fork and 5-speed electronic shifting (11/13/15/17/19T); the Java NEO 14 inch 3s Folding Bike has an aluminium fork and Shimano 3-speed mechanical shifting (11–13–17T). Both have 14" wheels, a 50T chainring, 145 mm cranks and hydraulic disc brakes.

Java NEO 14" or 16": which should I choose?

Choose the 14" if folded size matters most, and the 16" if you want easier climbing and longer rides. Jollymap measured the 14" NEO (3-speed) at about 59 cm long and 55 cm high folded, versus about 69 × 58 cm for the 16"; but the 16" uses 349 wheels and a wider gear range (11–32T on the 9-speed, 11–40T on the 12-speed electric), so climbing is easier. See the Java NEO 9S 16 inch 349 9 Speeds Folding Bike or the Java NEO 12s 16 inch 349 Electric Shift 12 Speed Folding Bike.

How much does the Java NEO 14" electric 5-speed weigh?

Java has not published an official weight for this model. Jollymap measured this bike at about 8.9 kg with pedals – about 0.5 kg lighter than the 14" 3-speed version (aluminium fork), which Jollymap measured at about 9.37 kg with pedals.

Are 5 gears (11–19T) enough for hills?

Yes for city flats, flyover ramps and gentle slopes. The 19T largest cog is a little easier than the 3-speed's 17T, but Jollymap's review found that a 14" would need a rear cog of about 25T to match the climbing ability of the 16" NEO. If you live near long climbs or often ride hilly routes, a 16" or 20" model is a better choice.

Can I convert the 14" 3-speed to 5 speeds myself?

It's difficult, so if you want 5 speeds it's better to choose this model. Jollymap's review notes that the 14" NEO has only 125 mm of rear hub spacing (145 mm on the 16"), and its short rear triangle gives a steep chainline, so converting from 3 to more speeds can make the chain rub neighbouring cogs, causing noise or skipping.

Can I take it on the MTR or a bus once folded?

For the MTR, luggage must not exceed 170 cm in total length, width and height, with no side over 130 cm. Java has not published this model's folded size; Jollymap measured the 14" 3-speed at about 59 cm long and 55 cm high folded (about 114 cm combined), so the width including pedals would need to be within about 56 cm to stay under the limit – please contact us before ordering to confirm this model's folded size. For franchised buses, section 14 of the Public Bus Services Regulations (Cap. 230A) only allows free carriage of items up to 5 kg and 0.1 m³, which a complete bike exceeds, so whether you can board depends on the bus company and the driver; there is no guarantee on minibuses either.

What rider height does it suit?

In Jollymap's review of the 14" NEO, the stock seatpost suits riders about 155–175 cm tall; above 175 cm a longer seatpost is recommended. The same review measured the 14" 3-speed's handlebar at about 95 cm from the ground (stock M-bar).

Is the "Java NEO MINI 5-speed electric 14 inch" the same bike?

The published specifications match. A Hong Kong retailer lists a "JAVA NEO MINI 5-speed electronic shift 14-inch carbon fork" with the same configuration (14" wheels, carbon fork, 50T 145 mm crankset, 5-speed electronic shifting, hydraulic disc brakes); on the Jollymap shop it is called the Java NEO 14 inch Electric Shift 5 Speeds Folding Bike.

Where can I buy the Java NEO 14" electric in Hong Kong?

It's available from the Jollymap online shop and store, in Titanium, Orange and White. To confirm a colour or the configuration, chat with us before ordering or message the Jollymap Facebook page.

Specifications and components follow the manufacturer's latest release and may change without notice. If in doubt, please contact us to confirm before ordering.
