Video: Jollymap unboxing of the Java J-Air R drop-bar folding bike with Shimano 105 Di2 (Jollymap YouTube channel, Cantonese)
The Java NEO Carbon 20 inch 451 105 Di2 Folding Road Bike (Java calls it the J-Air R) is a full-carbon folding bike with drop bars, built with Shimano 105 Di2 12-speed electronic shifting, a 52/36T double chainset, 451 wheels and Shimano 105 hydraulic disc brakes. Jollymap's unboxing weighed it at about 9.4 kg with pedals and drop bar. It brings road-bike hand positions and gearing to a bike you can fold away, for riders who want long-distance speed without giving up storage space.
Key Facts
- Category: 20-inch (ETRTO 451) full-carbon drop-bar folding bike, 2 x 12-speed electronic shifting
- Brand: Java (Shenzhen ChuangXinWei Bicycle Co., mainland China), part of the full-carbon J-Air line within the Java NEO folding range
- Standout feature: factory-fitted Shimano 105 Di2 with a 52/36T double chainset, plus a carbon drop bar and 451 wheels
- Key numbers: about 9.4 kg with pedals and drop bar (Jollymap measured); 52/36T chainrings, 170 mm cranks, 11–34T cassette; Shimano 105 hydraulic discs; 20 x 1-1/8 (28C) tyres
- Best for: riders who want road-bike speed on long rides and hills but have limited space at home or at work; riders new to drop bars will need some time to adapt
The Problem It Solves
Many 20-inch folding bike owners swap the stock 50T chainring for a 54T to get a higher top speed, and give up climbing gears in the process. The J-Air R comes with a 52/36T double and 451 wheels: in the big ring and 11T cog its top speed matches a typical 20-inch bike upgraded to 54T, and in the 36T small ring and 34T cog it climbs more easily than a typical single-ring 50T 20-inch folder. Jollymap's unboxing review notes that it combines a full-carbon frame, electronic shifting, larger 451 wheels and drop bars in one folding bike. For the full unboxing, read Jollymap's Java J-Air R Drop-Bar Folding Bike Unboxing (in Chinese).
Who It Suits
- Good fit: riders who want a full-carbon, electronic-shifting folding bike in one go; riders after a road-bike feel who often ride long distances or hilly routes; anyone short of space at home or in the office.
- Think it through: riders who have never used drop bars will need some time to adapt; riders who want a very low, aggressive road position may find the head post tall; the stock saddle and pedals are fine for daily riding, but Jollymap suggests budgeting for upgrades if you plan long rides.
- Other options: for a flat-bar, single-ring full-carbon 20-inch NEO, see the Java NEO J Air Carbon 20 inch 12 Speed Folding Bike; for an aluminium 451 folding bike, see the JAVA Fit 20inch 451 18 Speed Disc Folding Bike.
Key Features
Carbon frame, fork and seatpost
The frame, fork and seatpost are all carbon. Jollymap's unboxing review notes that the J-Air R uses the Java NEO series 20-inch carbon frame, with the marble finish running from the head post and fork through the main frame to the rear stays.
Shimano 105 Di2 with a 52/36T double
Most folding bikes run a single chainring; the J-Air R uses a 52/36T double, 170 mm cranks and an 11–34T cassette, much closer to road-bike gearing. The frame has a mount for a front derailleur adapter, which is what makes the double possible. Jollymap ran the numbers on its bike speed calculator at 80 rpm:
| Comparison | Setup | Calculated speed |
|---|---|---|
| Top speed: typical upgraded 20-inch | 54T chainring, 11T cog, 406 wheel | about 35.1 km/h |
| Top speed: J-Air R | 52T chainring, 11T cog, 451 wheel | about 35.2 km/h |
| Climbing: typical stock 20-inch | 50T chainring, 40T cog, 406 wheel | about 8.9 km/h |
| Climbing: J-Air R | 36T chainring, 34T cog, 451 wheel | about 7.9 km/h |
In other words, the J-Air R already matches a 54T-upgraded 20-inch bike on top speed, and its lower climbing speed at the same cadence means an easier gear for long hills.
Di2 battery hidden mid-frame, no effect on folding
Road bikes usually keep the Di2 battery in the seatpost or under the bottom bracket, but a folding bike's seatpost slides up and down and there is little room at the BB. Java places the battery in the middle of the frame with extra-long wiring, so folding does not affect the Di2 system.
Carbon drop bar with gravel-style flare
The drop bar is full carbon, about 36 cm wide on the tops and about 42 cm centre-to-centre at the drops, with flared drops similar to a gravel bike. The tops are narrower than a typical flat bar of over 40 cm, so steering is quicker; on the hoods your reach grows by about 7 cm compared with a flat bar, and up to about 10 cm in the drops. The J-Air R keeps the J-Air Carbon's taller head post, so the position is more upright than short-stem drop-bar folders such as the Dahon Archer P18 or Birdy P45, and easier on the lower back over long rides.
451 wheels and Shimano 105 hydraulic discs
451 wheels are slightly larger in diameter than standard 20-inch 406 wheels, rolling better and reaching higher top speeds while keeping the bike compact. Tyres are 20 x 1-1/8, i.e. 28C. Braking is Shimano 105 hydraulic disc, with consistent power and feel in the wet and on descents.

Chainrings are not listed in the table: this bike has a 52/36T double, while the J Air Carbon 20", the 20" 12-speed electronic and the 20" 9-speed carbon fork versions use a 50T single ring, all with 170 mm cranks. Weights in the table are measured in different ways (sources noted) and are for reference only.

Jollymap Recommends
The J-Air R comes with the same standard saddle and single-side quick-release pedals as the rest of the Java NEO family. If you plan long rides or road riding, Jollymap suggests two upgrades: a more supportive road saddle to suit the forward drop-bar position, and MTB clipless pedals with MTB shoes, because a folding bike often goes into malls, restaurants and building lobbies, and flat-soled MTB shoes are easy to walk in where road cleats are not. If you have never ridden drop bars, or are unsure whether the reach and head-post height suit you, chat with us or message our Jollymap Facebook page before ordering, with your height and usual routes.

FAQ
Is the Java J-Air R part of the Java NEO range?
Yes. The J-Air R is the full-carbon drop-bar version within the Java NEO folding family. Jollymap's unboxing review notes that it uses the Java NEO series 20-inch carbon frame, but with 451 wheels, a carbon drop bar and a Shimano 105 Di2 double. In our shop it is listed as the "Java NEO Carbon 20 inch 451 105 Di2 Folding Road Bike".
What is the difference between 451 and standard 20-inch 406 wheels?
451 wheels are slightly larger in diameter than 406. Both are called 20-inch, but 451 rolls better and reaches higher top speeds; with the 52T chainring the J-Air R already matches a 20-inch bike upgraded to 54T. 451 and 406 tyres are not interchangeable, so buy 451 tyres when replacing them (stock size is 20 x 1-1/8, i.e. 28C).
How much does the Java J-Air R weigh?
About 9.4 kg with pedals and drop bar, as weighed in Jollymap's unboxing. That includes the full-carbon frame, double drivetrain, Shimano 105 Di2 with its battery, hydraulic disc brakes and 451 wheels.
I have never ridden drop bars. Is a drop-bar folding bike right for me?
Yes, with some time to adapt. The tops are only about 36 cm wide, narrower than a typical flat bar of over 40 cm, so steering is quicker; on the hoods your reach grows by about 7 cm compared with a flat bar, and up to about 10 cm in the drops. On the plus side, the J-Air R's taller head post gives a more upright position than short-stem drop-bar folders, which is easier on the lower back on long rides.
How does the J-Air R differ from the Java NEO J Air Carbon 20 inch 12 Speed?
Mainly in wheel size, handlebar and gearing. The J-Air R uses 451 wheels, a carbon drop bar and Shimano 105 Di2 2 x 12 (52/36T, 11–34T); the Java NEO J Air Carbon 20 inch 12 Speed Folding Bike uses 406 wheels and Wheeltop 12-speed single-ring electronic shifting (50T, 11–40T), listed at about 9 kg with pedals. Choose the J-Air R for a road-bike feel, or the J Air Carbon 20-inch for flat bars and easier handling.
Where is the Shimano 105 Di2 battery? Does it affect folding?
No. Java places the Di2 battery in the middle of the frame with extra-long wiring, so folding does not affect the Di2 system. The two usual road-bike battery locations, inside the seatpost or under the bottom bracket, do not work on this frame.
Can I take it on the MTR or a bus when folded?
Java has not published the folded size of the J-Air R. The MTR limits luggage to 170 cm in total length, width and height, with no side over 130 cm, so check the actual folded size (including pedal width) before you travel. On franchised buses, the Public Bus Services Regulations (Cap. 230A) section 14 only allows free carriage of items within 5 kg and 0.1 m³, which a whole bike exceeds, so it is up to the bus company and driver; minibuses make no guarantee either.
Where can I buy the Java J-Air R in Hong Kong?
It is available from the Jollymap online shop and store. To check colours or specification, chat with us or message our Jollymap Facebook page before ordering.
