Java NEO 9S 16 inch 349 9 Speeds Folding Bike — Lightweight, Compact & Effortlessly Portable
The Java NEO 9S is Java's first tri-fold folding bike, pairing an aluminium alloy frame with a 9-speed drivetrain (L-TWOO shifter, Shimano rear derailleur and Sora cassette) and hydraulic disc brakes. The complete bike weighs about 10.2 kg with pedals and folds down to roughly 0.12 m³, making it a practical choice for commuters who need to carry their bike onto the MTR, or simply don't have space to store a full-size bike at home.
Key Facts
- Category: 16-inch (ETRTO 349) tri-fold folding bike
- Brand: Java (Shenzhen ChuangXinWei Bicycle Co., mainland China folding bike brand; official model NEO-349AL)
- Standout feature: redesigned rear triangle with its pivot aligned to the bottom bracket, reducing play and rattling at the fold
- Key numbers: approx. 10.2 kg with pedals, approx. 0.12 m³ folded, 9-speed (L-TWOO shifter + Shimano rear derailleur, Shimano Sora 11–32T cassette), hydraulic disc brakes
- Best for: commuters who need a compact folded footprint for the MTR
Why the Java NEO 9S stands out
Most tri-fold folding bikes have to trade off pedalling efficiency for their compact frame geometry. Java re-engineered the rear triangle so its pivot sits at the same point as the bottom bracket, shortening the BB-to-rear-wheel distance to just 35cm (vs. around 41cm on typical tri-folds). That means a snappier, more direct pedalling feel and a fold with less play and rattling. Wheelbase is 107cm and BB height is a low 26cm (vs. around 29cm on typical tri-folds), giving a noticeably more planted, stable ride than most small-wheel folders.
Who it's for
- Daily MTR commuters: folds to about 0.12 m³ and meets MTR's hand-carried baggage size limit (see FAQ below)
- Space-limited apartment dwellers: folds flat enough to stand against a wall or tuck by the door
- Riders who want light weight on a sensible budget: aluminium frame with a Shimano rear derailleur and 9-speed drivetrain and hydraulic discs
- Less ideal for: riders taller than about 180cm, or frequent longer-distance/countryside riding — the 20-inch NEO (see comparison table below) offers a higher handlebar and better rolling stability

Looking for a higher-spec version on the same 16" 349 platform? See the Java NEO 9S 16" 349 (Carbon Fork version) — upgraded to a carbon fork, and typically fitted with a different handlebar too (see FAQ below) — or the Java NEO 12s 16" 349 Electric Shift 12-Speed Folding Bike for electronic shifting. The same spec also comes in a limited polished-silver finish: the Java NEO 16" Folding Bike Chrome Limited Edition.
Jollymap's Advice
The stock saddle is on the firmer side and the pedals are a single-side quick-release type — worth an upgrade if you're commuting daily over longer distances. If you push the folded bike a lot, the Java Neo Easy Wheel Extension Bar makes rolling it around easier (the stock easy wheels are already fine for everyday flat-ground pushing — check with us before fitting larger wheels, as the rear triangle folds very close to the wheel). This model only comes in one frame size (16"), so if you're unsure whether the fit suits your height, please contact us before ordering with your height and inseam length.

FAQ
What's the difference between the Java NEO 16" and 20", and which should I get?
The main differences are wheel size and handlebar height. The 16" (349) folds smaller (about 0.12 m³), making it the better pick if you need to carry it onto the MTR often, or have limited storage space. The 20" (406) rolls over rough pavement more confidently and has a higher handlebar (about 100cm vs. about 92cm on the 16"), which suits taller riders or those who prefer a more upright, stable ride. Frame reach is similar on both, so saddle adjustment range is comparable. See the comparison table above for full specs. If you want a 20" that also keeps an aluminium fork and 9-speed mechanical shifting, see the Java NEO 20" 9s Folding Bike; Jollymap's article Java Neo 20 vs 16: what's different? (in Chinese) compares the two sizes in detail.
How much does the Java NEO 9S actually weigh with pedals?
About 10.2 kg (10.16 kg measured) with pedals fitted. That's on the lighter side for a 16" tri-fold folding bike, so carrying it up stairs or loading it into a car boot isn't much of a chore.
How big is it folded, and can I take it on the MTR or bus?
MTR requires that the combined length, width and height of hand-carried items does not exceed 170cm, with no single side over 130cm. The Java NEO 9S folds in three steps to an official size of about 69 × 30.5 × 59 cm (excluding pedals, a total of about 159cm), which is within MTR's limit; the pedals add some width, so it's best to remove the quick-release pedal before boarding. For buses, under the Public Bus Services Regulations (Cap. 230A) Section 14, the free baggage allowance is capped at 5kg and 0.1 cubic metres, which the whole bike typically exceeds — whether it's allowed on board depends on the bus company and driver. It also has built-in easy wheels so you can roll it along instead of carrying it once folded.
How is the Java NEO different from Brompton-style "mini folders"?
The Java NEO is a "tri-fold" design developed by a mainland Chinese brand, and it folds with a straightforward fold-in-half mechanism rather than Brompton's Z-fold, which makes folding more intuitive. It's generally more affordable than Brompton-style mini folders, but aftermarket accessory compatibility (racks, easy-wheel upgrades) is currently more limited — message us first if you have a specific accessory in mind.
Is the Java NEO 9S suitable for a first-time folding bike rider?
Yes. The 9-speed drivetrain and hydraulic disc brakes are easy to operate and more than sufficient for Hong Kong's everyday roads and light inclines, with no special setup knowledge required. If it's your first folding bike, practise folding and balance in an open area before your first ride out.
How should I look after it in Hong Kong's humid weather?
The hydraulic disc brakes and aluminium frame resist corrosion reasonably well, but wipe down the frame and chain after riding in the rain, and lubricate the chain regularly to prevent rust from affecting shifting. The folding joints should also be checked and lubricated periodically to keep them quiet.
Can I fit a larger easy wheel for pushing the folded bike?
You can, but the rear fork folds very close to the wheel on this model, so a larger easy wheel could affect how tightly it folds — check with us on sizing before upgrading. The stock easy wheels are already sufficient for everyday pushing on flat ground.
How does this compare to the Java NEO 9S 16" (Carbon Fork version)?
The main difference is that the carbon fork version upgrades the aluminium fork to carbon fibre, for slightly lighter weight and better vibration damping. The handlebar is often different too — the carbon fork version typically comes with a 6cm-rise bar, versus 2cm on this standard version, so it's not just the fork that changes. Check the product page for the current spec before you decide.
